I think its usually based off your credit history, and if you have paid on time/at all for stuff in the past.

If you have no credit history it might be difficult to get a contract which includes a free top end phone (SGSII/iPhone5). The usual tricks apply though, such as registering for the electoral role.

Just to add, my sister had no credit history and still got an iPhone4 on contract. There was a condition though, she had to pay for the 1st 3 months up front, as a kind of deposit.

Bang on. The usual deal for low credit score customers is either upfront payment or more likely - a restriction of contracts to =<£35 PCM. Some credit checks are done overnight which means sometimes people fail after getting their contract from a shop. This doesn't tend to go down well but if it happens to you don't go mental - they will sort it.

It's worth taking note of Myshra's post, if you get rejected the first time don't go crazy and start spam applying with other companies as this typically has a negative effect on your credit file.
