I went to university and got a degree in molecular biology.
I can't find a job.
I'm on JobSeekers.
I told them I want an office job / science job.
They haven't been able to help me find a job.
I apply for jobs ever so often.
So i'm just waiting.

Can they force me to do a menial job (e.g. cleaning) or do they have to find me a decent job?

I'm wondering how long this is going to go on for?

My cousin graduated in 2001 in he still doesn't have a job. He has a bad stammer though, so jobs are difficult.

Cant you just apply at every single place u know so that if a place ever comes up they at least have your name.

Should have learned a trade. I wish I did. :(

yep, i know of many people who have a degree and are stuck in really poor jobs. Shame really. Im gonna steer my son in the direction of brickwork/plumbing something like that.

Sorry its not really any help to you but just keep trying.

its not having a degree thats the problem, it having a degree in the right subjects. i know people who have left uni into £25-26k a year jobs

MW

loads of places seem to ask for random degrees, not in the subject area JUST A DEGREE?!?!
I don't get it!
meh, you should be doing any work they can give you tbh, and keep an eye out for better stuff, your going to be a better prospect for employers if you're working atm rather than sitting on your ass getting the dole.

A lot of employers are looking for a general aptitude that can be indicated by the fact that you're capable of studying a subject and passing exams on 3 years worth of material.

The theory goes that if you have that aptitude then the actual subject is incidental.

Well after 6 months of unemployment they put you on something called "New Deal" where u go once a week and speak to your personal adviser and they put you on a number of courses one of them is for 2weeks 9-4pm where they help you make a CV, look for jobs, advice on filling application forms etc. if you still havent found anything then they can put ppl in charity shops and painting churches etc.

thats a laughable resoning for employing someone!
I've applyed for places before (and before you say it, I did spell check any aplications before sending, and had them proof read to be shure they where ok) and when I didn't get an intervew they said that even tho I had 3-4 years experiance in that area, because I didn't have a degree they wouldn't even consider my aplication.
I can't afford to go do a degree, even WITH a stupid student lone. so how the hell am I suppsed to get these people to think straight

Oh and no they dont have to find you a decent job when u applied for jobseekers you would have had to put 3 choices of jobs you would do and they will hold you to each and everyone of them, even if u dont want to do the 3rd choice one

Isn't a menial job for the time being better than no job?

You can still apply for other jobs whilst employed you know! Most people don't get the right job in the right field appear in their lap right away.
