My Core i5 using a Corsair H50 idles around 20-25c. However Core#2 is always idling at 4-8c above the other three.

Under load they all seem to mostly even out, but Core#2 is still consistently higher by a degree or two.

Is this because there is a possible problem with the thermal compound in the area of core#2, or are the chips not physically laid out in that fashion (IE cores overlap maybe?).

If so, then maybe a re-application is in order?

My i5 is the same
Idle
Core 0 - 6C
Core 1 - 11C
Core 2 - 9C
Core 3 - 9C

On max load they become equal. Im not useing watercooled. Im air cooled :)

I was told some games and programs use specific cores for certain things. Thats probly why there spread out. Dont take my word for that, it was what i was told.

Sorry for the edit.

Have you over clocked? i got mines sitting stable at 3ghz.

6C is the largest variation on mine under load, most of the time they are within 2-3C of each other.

I'm only using the thermal pad supplied on the H50.

If you're not having any probs with the system when under load, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I had an e8400 and there was a 15c difference between the two cores, and theres been a few threads in the past relating to this prob. Obviously check the hsf is installed correctly, and if so, then just keep an eye on the system stability. In the end, i just forgot about my temp difference and it ran ok for over year until I sold it.

Same with my Core i5. Assuming cores #1,2,3,4:

Cores #1,3 are within 2-3 degrees of each other, but 5-8 degrees more than Cores #2,4.

Under load they all max out within a few degrees of each other. Same before and after reapplying CPU cooler so guess it's just the cores and not the installation!

Its common among a lot cpu's not just intel and the problem it self is age old

my:

x4 620 has approx 2-5c diff
am2 6000+ has approx 6c diff
am2 5200 has approx 11c diff
i7 has approx 4c diff

nothing to worry about, you can lap the cooler and cpu if you can be asked to even out the temp....however prob not on h50 :D
they all tend to even out under load

Well its all running nice and stable so I think I will leave well enough alone...

Thanks for the opinions

I've often wondered about this too. My core #2 on my i5 is consistantly as much as 5C cooler than the rest when priming.

I guess its a combination of how well the cpu heatspreader is fitted (at manufacture), how well the cpu cooler is then seated and exactly what the heatpipes are making good contact with.

Never had any issue so again, i wont worry.
