unexpected events that you escaped

my son when he was very young (about 3 or 4 I think - maybe younger) - accidently blew up our oven !

I was cooking one evening - doing a ratatouille or something on the hob, and fish in the oven. Was fairly hands-on cooking - lots of stirring etc - so was in front of oven for most of the 30 mins or so cooking time

there were about 5 mins to go or so and I went off to read forums/email (pc was in dining room next to kitchen)- beeper went off and I just ignored it as was reading a forum post - a minute or so later - I went back into kitchen, and just as I got to open kitchen door there was huge "bang" and the whole front of the oven blew off - I was about 9 foot away

when I say bang - thats the wrong description it sounded almost like a gun shot - it was instantaneous

glass flew past me without hitting me, and even though was "safety" glass some gouged out bits of the wall opposite, and some even hit wall opposite, bounced, and embedded into the cabinets same wall that the oven was along

all that was left of the front of the oven was the metal frame - all the glass was gone

I was in shorts as well, so I reckon if I'd returned 30 seconds earlier and I'd have a very nasty injury to my legs

even worse if my son had been in front of the oven with me

immediately afterwards all I could do was kneel down on the floor in shock

the cause of all this destruction, the day before we'd brought the food shop in, and my son had helped my wife unpack. Somehow without us noticing, he put a half can of baked beans into the oven right at the back. The day after was first time we'd used the cooker - I didn't see the tin in there

Had a few I guess, when I was 7 I was going to cross the road with one of my best friends, just before we crossed the road something in my head told me to stop. I did so, but unfortunately my friend didn't and was hit and killed by a car overtaking a tractor, If i hadn't of stopped it would have been me still wonder what would have happened if I had said something. One day when i was walking back from college my Dad stopped asked if i wanted a lift home, just going to get into the car when again something told me not and I just walked home. When i got home I saw Dads car had been hit by another car, he was OK but the passenger door and window had been smashed in where i would have been sitting. Finally on the fateful day of the London bombings I was going to meet my friend off the plane at Heathrow, I was going to my normal route of driving to Cockfosters and Picadilly line straight through to Heathrow, again I changed my mind on the way down and decided to drive to Heathrow only to find out that the Tube I would have got on was more than likely the one that Bombed.
Life sure is strange.:)

Used to work for the Royal Mail in the early 90s, and delivered mail to Bishopsgate the day before the IRA blew it up. Always remember getting letters on the following Monday, and not knowing which buildings were still standing/open. I was allowed inside the police cordon to see some of the damage up close, as I had to get the list of where the mail had to be redirected.

Not me personally but a friend has just returned 2 days ago from the same resort that the attacks in Tunisa were.

I'm still waiting for my parents to get back from there. They should have been on the beach on the day of the attacks but my stepdad had one too many beverages the night before and got up late, ended up staying poolside instead. Got inside quickly when they heard the gunfire and hid. Best hangover he'll ever have

Was evacuated from Cyprus in the 1974 war there. One of the most worrying parts was the Turkish mortar crew that set up in the back yard. Thankfully our neighbour came out and told them to clear off (which they duly did). None of us really wanted any kind of return fire if they had let a few rounds off!
