Unhappy about the prospect of CPU binning by OC.UK

As much as I would like to see this, the unfortunate consequence will be that since all the best chips have been binned into a premium pile, everyone buying a standard chip will always lose the silicon lottery.

It is not fair to all other customers.

Unless perhaps every remaining CPU is then sold at stock price minus the premium on the binned chips, which I don't see happening.

I don't see binning as a good business decision as there is too much collateral damage. I would think twice between purchasing any standard non-binned CPUs from OC.UK.

On the other hand, if there are single (non bundle) binned chips being sold at a little premium, perhaps even with delid+liquid metal, then I would be interested in their purchase.

Thoughts?

wut? So you'd buy a binned chip but don't agree they should be binning them when the ones that "fail" are going into prebuilt systems and will never be sold as retail chips?

If you look at the posts by Gibbo or 8pack you'll see the "binning" doesn't work like that.

To quote Gibbo and 8 pack;

Boxes are sealed, we do not test retail stock!

We test OEM stock and the OEM stock we test is not for re-sale except in systems and pre-configured bundles.

We explained the binning till we are blue and white in the face. No this is not how it works.

Only system Oem stock is ever tested. The lesser bins going into non overclocked machines typically used in office pcs or similar.

Intel are not binning anything for anyone

They've said that they only bin OEM chips. So if you're buying sealed product your odds are the same as anyone. and apparently they don't sell the chips that fail the binning process, at least not directly. Apparently they go into office machines bulk sold to businesses.

I understand your worries. But the chips are separated out of circulation before the binning process so the non binned chips you can buy have the same chance of being good as if they didn't offer binned chips. :)

We've said before and we'll obviously have to continue to repeat ourselves...but chips that have been binned, whether they pass or fail DO NOT END UP BACK ON THE WEBSITE! unless we decide to sell them as binned processors.

We buy them in under a hidden part code, then they are moved to other hidden part codes based on their performance.

The binning process leaves the CPUs marked, we couldn't hide it even if we wanted to.

Indeed, I do understand now. If not planned already, you might want to put this as a disclaimer in a prominent position.

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

I came up with it as a stupid teenager. All my old friends still call me 'rage' even now that I am in my 30's (and perhaps just as stupid) ;-)

I'll only buy binned chips from OcUK for this reason. For everything else I'll go elsewhere unless OcUK offer the best value and I'm not bothered about overclocking.

Are you being deliberately ignorant? Re-read the response from ScottiB, and the quotes of other OcUK staff (Gibbo & 8Pack).

The process of binning separate stock OEM chips does not affect your chances of getting a decent clocking RETAIL chip.

It effects my decision making. What do OcUK do with the other chips? Send them to land fill.. I don't think so.

I am selling a single speaker on ebay. The terms SINGLE SPEAKER and COLLECTION ONLY are mentioned at multiple places. Every once in a while, someone asks me if I can deliver the PAIR of speakers to xxx.

Why these idiots send a message before reading the listing, I don't know. It's in the bloody title!

I think it may be the extension of real life, where a section of people tend to open their loud mouths to yap yap yap before thinking. I can't understand how this sub-sect of the population goes through life in this manner.

I might be a stupid guy, but I'm the sort to think twice before opening my mouth or asking a question, as I am sure is the same for most people.

Buy retail chips (from anywhere) if you are worried about it - Intel sealed ones aren't easily resealed as per factory and regardless of what OcUK do or don't do some other places definitely put the ones that aren't great into main stock.

This has been answered several times. They are sold in pre-built systems, and systems bought for office use.

They do not go out to retail customers.

So, presumably, they get in a bulk order, bin the chips for the order, keep the best, and send the rest as part of that bulk order, binning as they go until order is complete? Or just bin a load of chips, and have the rest sitting on a shelf for when such orders come in.

I like to think the duds get sent to Germany for interrogation. If OcUK need to fill orders, those orders will get filled with whatever chips are available :p

TBH though binning Kaby lake seems much of a mute point with the clock speed hike from Intel. Intel have already binned the chips once...

Did you actually read this thread properly or just came in for a moan?
