Uni Accommodation...

I'm hoping to start at the University of York this October and am stuck as to where to go for accommodation.

The on campus rooms are horribly small, some of the smallest I've seen, and really quite... basic. I didn't expect much, but from the rooms I've seen, I expected more.

Basically, I've been given the choice of getting a flat about 10 minutes away with my girlfriend or getting a place in halls. Is the social life really going to be that different off campus?? Having looked at it, getting the flat is about £600 a year cheaper than halls, but what would you guys do?

I don't want to exclude myself from the buzz that is Uni social life, but then again I'd much rather just have a flat for me and my girlfriend than share a kitchen, common room and bathroom with 10 or 12 other students. I'm just looking for a few opinions if you were in my position.

Thanks :D

Flat is £600 cheaper per year :O

+ you would have to move out in your 2nd year anyway

Personally, i didnt like the people, although there is always a chance i'll find that evil hot girl somewhere, so i suppose its worth talking to hippies, emotional, and lazy waste of spaces for 8 months

Dude I would go Halls first year, experience it mate. If you dont then your always wonder. Life is about experiencing things after all :)

You have a girlfriend who, it seems, you're prepared or expected to move in with. Can I ask why you're asking us why you should not move in with her?

It's a rhetorical question; you don't need to answer, man. Tell me if I'm wrong :)

Well, of course I want to move in with my girlfriend... and it is considerably cheaper...

But everyone who I've spoken to that's gone to uni has said that the social life is something you need to experience. I think I'm leaning towards the flat because it's closer to the city center than the uni and still reasonably close to the uni itself and with the £600 extra a year I could actually afford to go out every other night.

I just don't know if I'd be making the wrong choice. Is living in halls really that special?

Not that moving in with your girlfriend won't be brilliant, I'm sure, but you will miss out on friendships and social experiences if you don't live in halls, and yes, that's worth it.

I aint bothering with halls, they're crap at plymouth (where i'm going) and more expensive than going for shared housing.
10 minutes isn't exactly far, you'll still meet people unless you never come out.

I've been going down to uni for weekends and stuff and already know a bunch of people just from going out and getting lashed.

in my opinion if you lived off campus you would soon feel like your missing out when all your new mates are living so close together in halls. I'd go to halls if i were you, get involved!

Halls is 'special' in the same way that living with a random group of good/bad nobodies is 'special'.

Go with GF into new flat = choose your randoms and improve status with GF
Go into Halls = distance GF and want to kill Marco on the 2nd floor who thinks he can play guitar at 2am in the morning while eating your food and ****ing your girlfriend.

Close one.

edit : have any of the previous posters actually lived in Halls ever or for more than the first year? Yeah, thought not.

You'll end up living with your girlfriend in the first year, spending all your time with her and not making any friends.

For some reason you'll split up part way through the second year and you'll feel absolutely **** because you're away from home with no friends and you're living in a flat you can't afford any more because she was paying half.

Just sayin.

My gf stayed with me while she went to uni.

She doesn't regret moving in with me, she still went out and partied, she just came back at night :)

£600 cheaper? is that taking bills etc into consideration? remember everything is paid for in halls.
Without wanting to sound the pessimist, are you going to still be with your gf in a year?

Halls all the way. Not going to halls would be a gargantuan error.

And I really hope you haven't picked York because your girlfriend is going there.
