Uni Advice

I'm in halls atm, been here for about two weeks. Worst thing is the noise, constantly drunken idiots shouting and making noise at night, you can't get a decent amount of sleep so I find myself falling asleep in lectures and missing work...etc.

This is a big problem, my girlfriend is in halls this year and it's pretty awful in that respect. I know students like getting drunk etc etc and we all go out and have a good time but people run up and down the corridors at 4am shouting, banging on doors, listening to very loud music at 3am, etc etc.

It's antisocial but nobody seems to care. She hasn't had a good nights sleep since she moved in :(

Makes me glad I never bothered moving out for Uni - although if you get with the RIGHT people, a student house can be a LOT of fun.

Just halls with random idiots = nightmare. It's like they've suddenly realised Mum wont tell them off for being up late and they are milking it with no respect for anyone else whatsoever.

I can understand that - what do you mean by the right people for a flat? Just not geeks?

What a lot of people do is live in halls for the first year, put up with the morons, make a good bunch of friends, and then move into a student house with said bunch of friends.

Friends tend to be more respectful of their other friends, and thus you dont get doors banging at 4am and drum and bass on max volume at 2am.

Sadly this can be true, but as I said earlier any incidents I've heard of from mates in first year have been dealt with quickly. Most people are decent and don't appreciate these types so if you get enough people to complain it'll be sorted. Normally a threat of being kicked out of halls (v. bad if its part way through the year) or out of uni all together -normally does the job. For really persistent ones I know people who just took it into their own hands and beat them at their own game - choose a night when you know they're in at 9 the next morning or better yet an night pre exam or hand in for them :p -usually gets the message across! I'd tell your gf to wait a while -it sucks but after all its the 3rd week back and freshers will be freshers! Then try option 1 above ;).

Just say for instance if I was going to Northumbria - would I get into accommodation if I live in Newcastle already?

I'm gonna start looking at other uni's tomorrow - anybody know what the good ones are for computer courses such as computer science and the like?

Yeah should be fine getting accommodation - just make sure you apply as soon as you get your A-level results.

Can't tell you about computing courses (sport & exercise science myself) but you'd probably get a better idea (compared to the open day) if you tried to talk to one of the students doing the course to see if it would suit you.

I was in Stoke doing a biomechanics placement in the summer (got to work with some GB athletes and footy players :D) and heard good things about the computing departments at Staffs. uni (I was staying with some post grads). Could be worth looking in to.
