Hey lads

I've got an interview for a place at uni tomorrow. I was thinking of turning up in what in normally wear (casual and reasonably smart, minus my skanky trainers :D). I've been reading some interview tips and some are recommending to turn up suited and booted which comes across as a bit over top to me. I don't know though. What's the general consensus here? The course is Computer Science. Sorry for the lame thread :D

Computer Science? Turn up in an T-shirt with a binary joke based slogan ;)

Suited and booted is over the top... I'd go Shirt / Trousers / Shoes (or smart trainers).

I showed up at Reading in smart trousers and a shirt, Id say that was smart casual, something you might wear to a wedding reception if you werent invited to the ceremony and dont really know anyone!
I didnt get into Reading but that was probably to do with my failed attempt at A-Levels

Smart casual. Don't over dress, but don't under dress either.

I'd say the minimum in smartness should be smart jeans, plain/simple t-shirt, simple jumper, smart trainers.

Maximum: plain or patterned shirt, smart trousers, belt, decent shoes, no tie.

I remember posting a similar thread when it came to my uni interviews a few years ago.

I ended up wearing a suit to mine and when I got there I was glad I did because all the guys were wearing suits so I didn't feel out of place. I also just told myself that although it seems over the top they can't mock your appearance. I don't know if it made any difference or not but I got accepted.

For another interview to a different uni around the same time I just wore trousers and a shirt because I had to do a fair bit of travelling to get there. I also got offered a place there so I guess it doesn't really matter what you wear as long as you look smart. I don't think you can go too overboard though if you really want the place.

I do tours around campus for students on interview days. Get a mixed bag generally on clothing and it doesn't really matter but the ones who come with there mums and/or dads seem so bloody nervous, quiet as a mouse and ask daft questions about term dates which there parents have probally drilled into them.
My bit of advice is to go dressed what your comfortable in and ask the questions you want but might be too embarrassed to ask, believe me i've been asked some daft things by some 'intelligent' people.
This is at leeds uni for an engineering degree so don't use my advice if your sitting an entry exam/interview for oxbridge.

OK thanks lads. I think I'm going with casual shoes, smart jeans and a simple top. I don't actually have my own smart shirt and so on so I'd be borrowing someone else's and look like a goon. I believe a tour is held before the interview so it comes across as quite informal so I think it should be cool.

Thanks again :)

I also have an interview tomorrow(today). In the email it said:
It is important to stress that this is not a selection interview as such, and in fact, the decision on the type of offer will have been made prior to the interview.

Smart jeans and top for me.

haha what time tomorrow and where abouts exactly do you know?

i did business admin/CS in my 1st year, didnt have an interview or anything though

I'm just printing some stuff off to read whilst travelling up then I'm hitting the hay :D

Grimond building @ 11.

Edit

urgh can't even string a sentence together, I haven't got much luck for tomorrow :D

You should wear whatever feels the most comfortable for you. Don't feel like you have to wear a suit - for my interview I was told that the tutor wouldn't dress up for me, so I shouldn't feel compelled to dress up for him.

When I had my interview for Warwick I wore a suit and got an offer. However they were all to posh for me and I couldn't stand it :D I came to Cov instead. (+it was better for my degree). I'd go smart casual, something you feel comfortable in. If its a proper interview for a place. Remember to ask them questions as it shows your interested and keen. Things like graduate pass rates (and the percentage that go on to get jobs), is there a society for the facualty. One of my favourites is always (may not apply here) "How do you personally find the job?/working for the company/being in the university enviroment?" it throws them off a bit but allows you to creep into a casual conversation about what its really like. ;)

I wore a suit to all my uni interviews, and I think about half the other applicants did too.

Who care's if most other people aren't? You're the one who's made more effort.:)

I would be doing the tours and such at Kent today but I killed my foot last week so I am not going to be doing them, I would suggest smart casual, nothing to over the top, shirt and tie at most really.

<TourGuide>Dont worry about the interviews, they want to get an idea of who you are, what you would like to do, what you know already, think of it more as an informal chat, also say you want to go for the year in industry, you could go to Vienna, Bangladesh or Hong Kong in your third year (all those placements are exclusive to Kent I believe), I went on the Vienna one so it is damn good. </TourGuide>
