Uni interview

Hey lads

I've got an interview for a place at uni tomorrow. I was thinking of turning up in what in normally wear (casual and reasonably smart, minus my skanky trainers :D). I've been reading some interview tips and some are recommending to turn up suited and booted which comes across as a bit over top to me. I don't know though. What's the general consensus here? The course is Computer Science. Sorry for the lame thread :D

Hey mate

I go to Kent Uni - on placement year at the moment.

Show up in smart casual - dont wear a suit or you'll look like a mug.

Basically, something you'd wear on Saturday to go out somewhere nice with the family is good imo.

Oh, and Grimond is the building behind the library (a large square 4 storey building) towards the back of campus ;)

good luck.

PS be warned when you show up you have about 15 minutes in grimond reception talking to people, if you go on your own make sure you're able to break the ice and talk to the lecturer or other applicants or you'll be stood there on your own like a mug ;).

And finally, it's not really an "interview" :) its more like a "Chit Chat" to ensure you're sane.

Trousers, smart shoes, and then either open collar, or shirt and tie, jumper optional. This is presentable and smart for a uni interview, and is a good compromise between a full suit and casual dress.

Oh, and good luck.

BTW is it a full sit down 1 on 1 sort of interview, or more a departmental meet and greet/chat?

I just got back (bloody long day). Most were casual and even some were a little scruffy so that was good. The interview was very informal, a chit-chat basically. The bloke doing my interview was pretty funny which helped. I don't know how I came across but I got an offer. Actually experiencing the atmosphere was great, nice place :)

When I got in I just got my welcome pack and read it for a minute or two then this previous student came over and talked about the course, nice girl. You definitely need to break the ice though, you do feel like a goon.

<TourGuide>Dont worry about the interviews, they want to get an idea of who you are, what you would like to do, what you know already, think of it more as an informal chat, also say you want to go for the year in industry, you could go to Vienna, Bangladesh or Hong Kong in your third year (all those placements are exclusive to Kent I believe), I went on the Vienna one so it is damn good. </TourGuide>

Haha the lovely lady who sorts out all the placements (her name escapes me now) was talking about placements abroad and mentioned students going to Vienna.

Very impressed about how Kent deals with its graduates, seem to have it really nailed.

Thanks once again to everyone who replied :)

If it's an informal interview: Shirt + smart jeans, maybe a tie, decent shoes.
if it's formal: Suit

I've got a visit day with a chat with a member of staff at Liverpool a week on saturday, I'm wearing a short + tie, with a sleeveless jumper, some smart black jeans, and smart black shoes. But that's the sort of thing that I am comfortable in, that's smart cas imo ;)

What course is it? I remember you talking about medicine or something related. Good luck dude :)

I've seen a billion people these past few weeks attending interviews for medicine and everyone has been wearing at least shirt/trousers/shoes/tie... girls have come in blouse/skirt/sleeveless jumper combos.

A full suit? Cripes. I never even considered that when I had my uni interview. Went in a t-shirt (I think), and they didn't seem to give a stuff. Got the place, so my friendliness must have won them over. :o

I'd spend more time working on your technique. If your Computer Science course is anything like mine was, the large majority of students have terrible social skills (I know that sounds harsh, but it's true). If you can talk well, you'll stand out a mile.

I got a good offer dude, my technique is sound!

Nah the interview definitely could have gone better (always room for improvement) but I feel it did go well. I mentioned I used to work for a building firm, he seem to lax up a bit and started talking about going out and getting ****** hehe.

I see exactly what you mean about standing out in that manner though, some did come across as very timid.

Medicine= always a formal interview

Congrats, thou as I said at kent it's not really an interview, just a simple sanity test and more of a day for them to show you everything that's there incase you dont like it so you can go find another Uni. Normally the day all in all is quite good - I helped with it last year.

They wont have offerd you unconditional sadly ;).

Who 'interviewed' you anyway? Do you remember their name? :D Also was Mr Eager there doing all the stuff again (older guy with grey hair)

Well we were just walking to the interview bit, dude opened the door and said my name and sent me in. I had no time to grab the bloke's name (wasn't even on his door, he had a comic strip on it lol)! The CS student who took us said he's known as being the funniest lecturer in the CS department so I don't know if that highlights anyone for you!

Yep, Bob seemed to be leading the day. Is that name tag new? :p

Bob's name tag been about for a long long while, and if it was the funniest cs lecturer it was probs Tim Hopkins, the bloke makes anything interesting and swears like a fish wife at times which just makes him awsome.
