With Uni round the corner its time for me to start looking at getting myself a laptop.

Got about £700 to spend

Now i am maybe being a bit geeky or picky but Intel Core 2 Duo only and a dedicated graphics card. Bit of an Nvidia boy personally but struggling to find anything with an Nvidia graphics card in it

Hard-drive is irrelevant as i want to replace it with a SSD anyway.

Currently looking a Dell Studio 15

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P7350 (2.0 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, 3 MB L2 Cache)
Genuine Windows Vista® SP1 Home Premium (64 BIT) - English
15.6in Widescreen Full High Definition (1920x1080) WLED with TrueLife
4096MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048]
320GB (5.400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
512MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570
Fixed Internal DVD+/-RW Slot Load Drive including Software
2.0 Mega pixel Integrated Web Camera
Internal UK/Irish Qwerty Backlit Keyboard

Over the standard laptop as you can see i have added a higher resolution screen and a backlit keyboard. Using a discount code i can get this laptop for £693 posted etc.

Anything beat this. Not wanting any cheap brands like Acer, Emachines, Advent etc.

Been looking at HP, Dell, Sony but only had any luck with Dell to be honest

Thanks
Grant

Acer are certainly not a cheap brand...

Don't be a smart****. They're surprisingly good. Hence why I posted. Search the forum and you will read from variety of members very happy with the 6930 or whatever it is.

The problem is that you aren't going to get a 'quality' brand laptop with better specs at this price - they are expensive for a reason.

What? I never said anything bad about Acer... lol

My mate got an ACER, don't know what model it was but while it was good value for money i wasn't impressed with the quality so acer is a no go.

hehe, i know the uni will have facilities but i want my own laptop, lol

Get a MacBook? Intel Core 2 Duo and an Nivida 9400m. To add to what's already been said, you aren't going to get a premium brand laptop with such a small budget. The Vaio's and the decent Dells are all going to be upwards of £1000. You certainly shouldn't turn your nose up at Acer though, they have some pretty good laptops for the price. If you can stretch to £1000 then that will probably increase your choice although for a decent portable gaming machine if that's what you're after it's going to be clocking in at £1500 and upwards. If you can't stretch then just go with the Dell you specced if you aren't prepared to drop down a brand.

Acers are very good. Supplied dozens of these over the years and only ever seen one Psu fail which was covered under warranty. Had my Acer for 7 years and still has 4hrs battery life and has ATi gfx. Asus is also good value for money.

Bought a Dell Studio XPS 1340. after looking in a shop (guess i won't be allowed to say) i really liked the 13" laptops, and they seemed ideal for uni!

So i managed to get all this for £700 quid
Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 (2.4ghz)
4Gb Ram
Nvidia 9500m 256mb (with hybrid SLI)
500gb 7200rpm HDD
etc

Should be here today (when i'm at work, so will get it tomorrow). Ca wait, lol

Hope you're happy with it. Maybe you can post some pics of it in action later? :D

Its here, woop woop :D:D

very pleased with it so far, although i haven't got much further than turning it on

Still debating if i'm going to wipe the HDD and put windows 7 on it, or whether i'm just going to try and remove McAfee and get AVG on it

pictures in a min (can try the bluetooth on it, lol)

As promised (pictures takin on my old N73, my 5800 is off for repair again :()

did you get the windows 7 upgrade voucher with it?

<edit> a little advice: remove McAfee, it's crap. don't get AVG, it's even worse.

of all the free antiviruses, Avast! is the best.

I didn't buy it from Dell directly, got it off the bay and as far as i'm aware it didn't come with an upgrade voucher (and the description didn;t say i was getting one)

But either way, i have a copy Windows 7 to put on it!

How can you claim AVG is crap, its one of the most popular recommended anti virus programs and i've used it for years without a problem

Without a problem or without a detected virus? I used to use avg but was warned off it by these very forums, I assume the windows guys here know better than me.

Thanks for the thread. I agree that 13" is probably ideal, tricky choice between a 10" netbook and a 13" laptop for me.

yea, been fine, and put it this way, my computer is still running great and without a virus.
AVG has also been recommended in a couple of the recent computer magazines (dunno if i can mention them or not) so... However, if it is no longer recommended, i might look into changing.

As for the size, 10" from the work go was always to small for me, and not powerful enough either. I was looking at getting a 15" but after seeing a 13" thought it was the perfect size and now i have the laptop i would say it is for me!
