Uni is no good, what else could i do?

I'm in the same situation with regards to Uni. I'm studying something I don't want to do, I'm not enjoying the course work and the majority of my class mates are anonymous, or from India, understanding them is difficult at times.

I've spoken to the head of the subject and he's said that the first year that I'm in now doesn't really matter and that you could still get a first class honors degree even if you fail the entire first year. I took some comfort from this and am now preparing for Semester 2, I'm going to change my outlook and work much harder. Maybe speak to your tutors and see if there's anything they can do. I'm as guilty as you when it comes to not having much motivation, but I don't want to be working menial jobs my whole life. I'm 22 and not getting any younger so I need to pull my socks up and start working now before it's too late, you should try and do the same.

I'm training to be an Electrician, I'm on my second year and loving it but I still struggle with the maths side of it, I started the course when I was 19, 20 now.

Imo if you're interested in what you're studying then persevere because it'll be worth it in the end.

I'm paying now as a result of me not knowing what I wanted to do and as a result ended up wasting 2 years doing an IT course which didn't teach me anything really.

I'm in a similar situation, 2nd year, struggling. Finding it a lot tougher this year. I say just stick at it or at least go speak to your advisor like I'm doing to see what options there are etc.

you would struggle big time to get an apprenticeship at your age.
maybe a job in mc donalds would do?

Personally I think theres 3 easy ways into skilled work.
College then university, millitary training and apprenticeship.

Other ways but those are the 3 easy ones, going out and getting a job and working your way up isn't easy.

In your case I'd say go get an apprenticeship as a sparky, if you wanna do it, personally I love hands on work and I do a bit here and there with a mate.
But after seeing the lack of money if you go freelance no way i'd have it as a career, thats just me, my uncles are all tradesmen and haven't got a pot to **** in. Theres money in it but it depends whether you get the work.
I personally thought, well, I'm good at business, theres money in it, i'll do that for a while and then when i've got money behind me I can do what I want.

I was in the same position as the OP more or less, I ended up sticking it out, failing my 3rd year and being unable to resit/continue. Had a breakdown, moved back in with parents, and am still depressed and unemployed 5 years later.
Get your nose to the grindstone, or if that's really not where you want to be then work out what is. You don't want to keep on coasting, when the ground gets rocky you come to an abrupt stop.

Same as the OP. Got results today... failed 3 modules and got an A in the other one. Was a complete wasteman for the 1st semester and am going back tomorrow to discuss my options with my tutor, who I've never met before. I pray they wont kick me out and i can stay for this semester and hopefully do some work. :( :( :(

They wont kick you out. Basically you will have to resit the modules you have failed at some stage. You can fill in a mitigating circumstances form if there is a particular reason why your grades went down. Such as family bereavement, psychological / medical issues etc. Hope it helps keep your chin up sometimes everyone needs a good kick in the right direction. Whenever you feel like not working remember how you feel now. If that doesnt give you the incentive nothing will.

just resit them in summer if you genuinly want to stay and will work. I wish id taken me failing a few in 1st year as a hint that uni wasnt for me.

It took me from 16 to now (23) to find where I want to be.

This man speaks the truth.

I was studying computer sciences and dropped out after first year to be eligible for the false start rule.

I am now studying film & television and love with what im doing. I know this is the industry i want to be part of.

At 22 i know im going in the right direction but it took me a year of education then 2 years out to decide where my passion lay.

If you feel you need more support speak to student services or a lecturer.

.. And best of luck.

Have some self belief and put the effort in! Don't you think it'd be incredibly rewarding to develop your abilities and realise yourself? What you get out of life is directly correlated with what you put in. You've made it through your first year, so you've got a big chunk of your course out the way already. In many degrees your first year doesn't count towards your final result anyway, in which case you could still get a decent classification.

The danger is with an attitude like yours is that you become a self-fulfilling prophecy- your philosophy is geared around not being bothered to do work, so you don't do any. You need to initiate a proactive habit, and stick to it.

If you don't, you can always join the rear of an ever-lengthening dole queue ;)
