Well I need the 1440*900 screen to get lots of code on the screen when programming, 1280*800 isn't enough for developement IMO. The extra desktop space from 1440*900 will be nice too, plus more screen space for web browsing. The higher res will give you a little lower framerates in games though unless you run with borders or stretched. I haven't seen either screen in the flesh so couldn't comment about their quality (my vostro 1500 should be here tomorrow).

TBH the Acer sounds like a good deal if you're going to use the HD-DVD drive (if not the vostro is cheaper and better specced), but Acer have a reputation for poor build quality and CS (yes even worse CS than Dell). Also I think the Acer is the 8600 GS which is slower than the GT in the vostro.
