right, i have chosen Birmingham as my Firm, and Brunel as my Insurance, for Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

are there LAN sessions there? :D

We used to have LANs in our halls between about six or seven people, only did it once or twice. There is generally more interesting things going on, although sometimes it is good to nerd it up. Surprising amount of girls would pop in and have a play ;)

There's a place on Corporation St near Aston University called Omega Sektor, although I've never been myself. If you're going to Birmingham you'll be Selly Oak side of town so It's a bit of a trek. I'm going to echo what others have said, if you;re going to uni there's more than LAN sessions. Birmingham's a great city and a very good university. I've really enjoyed my 4 years here, will be sad when it's over.

You're going to uni and you plan to spend your time at LAN parties? Seriously, you need to get out there and do stuff – you'd be mad not to. I was never that active or outgoing before uni but I certainly am now. If you really must, there's a video game society you could get involved in. Never been to it though, so I can't say what it's like.

Good choice of uni though – currently studying Theoretical Physics and Applied Maths there and loving every minute of it

Which halls?

Well in Birmingham City Center there is a place called the Omega Sektor which is apparently the biggest LAN gaming center in the world. They have loads of PC's with lots of games on them including UT, Battlefield, Steam and the other regulars. They quite often have lockins at the weekend too. The Gadget Show were these a couple of weeks ago.

thanks gus. im not gonna spend everday LANing. just looking for once a week. even im not that sad :D.
as for halls, i was thinking the yellow brick ones near the lake (name always eludes me :p) but IICR they arnt self catered are they?

didnt really like the selly oak ones...a bit too villagey

We used to have LAN parties at our student house occasionally. We had a pretty big house and could easily fit 8 gamers in. Our biggest worry was whether our house's crappy wiring could handle so many PCs being used at once.

This never got in the way of drinking though. We'd game for most of Saturday, go down the pub Saturday night and then come back for some more gaming on Sunday.

But, yes, your priorities should lie elsewhere. :p

Maple Bank? Shackleton?

I think Maple Bank can be self-catered if you want, but Shackleton is always catered. Self-catered is the way to go tbh.

There are practically no first years in Selly Oak anyway – that's where you'll live in the second/third year.

Nothing wrong with the occasional game over the network. Spent a few evenings playing Source/C&C/SC over the staffs uni LAN :)

Funniest was when me and a mate went a played in one of the computer labs in Welcome Week, where all the 'hardcore' gamers were. We cleaned up, and kept quiet, lol.

We didn't have LANs in our halls but there were a few gamers about tbh.
Also wouldn't suggest touting yourself as a gamer as soon as you get there or continuing any hardcore traits which you may or may not have.

There are many other possibilities other than getting drunk as I'm sure you'll find
But guess it depends on you really. Freshers week without being intoxicated in one way or another would be very interesting indeed!

Good luck
