Uni Results

BSc Comp Science - 56% overall

Just got them this morning. Its only my first year results, and as a result i slacked like hell, so with any luck i can improve on that a lot next year when its actually graded.

I got a 2:2 overall in Physics with Comp Sci... bit disappointing considering I got a first for my final year project but my maths modules bring my average down quite a bit. But it's still cool.

I'm sure I've heard people saying that before, no wait, that was me as well. ;) Always started the year with good intentions but never quite got round to doing enough work to make a difference and I refused to worry about it. Doesn't seem to have hurt me too much anyway, I've ended up with a decent enough degree at the end of it. :)

Sounds exactly like what happened to me this year... Did the readings etc. throughout the course of the year then by the time it got to exams was so burned out I just couldn't get the revision done. I also seem to drop down quite a bit from my essays. I averaged a mid-2.1 for first year but I think that's mainly down to not knowing what the examiners wanted and also not working enough for revision during the second semester.

Hopefully next year when it counts towards my degree next year motivation won't be a problem and I can pull it up to a first.

It seems as though for most of you, your first years carried no weighting towards your final degree mark, mine carried 11%.

To be honest i wish mine did carry a bit over as it would have made me work harder.

Same here, 1:3:5 ratio of weighting for the respective years.

As I moved universities after the second year my previous two years did not count towards my final grade, it was all based on final year marks. I could have either got a third or first. :S.

Abertay appears to do it differently to everyone else, your final year (fourth) is the only one that counts towards determining the degree classification and you do 8 modules (dissertation counts as one double) but only the best 6 count.

Got a 1st in comp. sci. :D

~83% average for the final year, got 87% in my dissertation

Congrats :) Do you mind if I ask what you did for your dissertation? I have no idea what to do.

Good question, I'm lucky in that I'll be working for a company that I'm a shareholder of... A 2:2 isn't necessarily bad though, at least not with a degree in something like physics. I imagine you'd just have to sell yourself that much better - have extra-curricular things on your CV that give you one-up on others applying for similar jobs.

If I didn't have my company though, I'd probably be looking at doing accountancy.

Got a 2.1 in Computer Networking, so I'm pretty pleased. Would've taken a 2.2 at the start of my final year as I completely lost all motivation for the subject.

What next?

Well, though I'd really put my degree to good use.....

Applied to join the police.:D

Thanks..

I made an AI player for Connect-4 (and programmed different ways to analyse game boards etc for the different 'players'), then tested/improved upon them using various well known optimisation techniques. I then applied that to another game (Connect-5 without mavity basically).

I was originally going to just make Connect-4 playable over the web in something similar to Valve Steam but my tutor (who was also my supervisor) was adamant that I'd do something that involved algorithm design/analysis since a more software engineering oriented project is pretty standard stuff..

Got my results for my first year a week or two back came out with a 2:1, pretty pleased really considering that doesn't even contribute to my final degree results.
