Uni students - your locals?

Just wondering those of you that are in Uni (away from home), what are the locals like for you on a night out?

In Aber they are horrendous. Usually come out only on a Saturday, and they cause so much trouble, more than what happens on any other night of the week. And more trouble and problems than the students cause, all they do is go out looking for fights, basically just a load of *****.

I did my undergrad at Plymouth... Union Street on a Saturday night was a no go area for most students. Always talk of marines and locals having it off and when I went down it really wan't very nice. :p

Where I am now is just a small town, locals seem ok, but then the students probably outnumber the locals most of the time.

Awwwwww cmon, Union Street has been like that for years - 9 times out of 10 us Navy lot are scrapping the Marines and keep it between ourselves.

Although I have seen a few times a group of chavvy Plymouthian ****-holes have gone upto a group of marines and see them get battered every time. I mean, a marine is a big muscle bound god of a man and you can spot them a mile away, why would you pick a fight with them??? They have been to war, and would think nothing of punching a Plymouth kid in the face.

Plymouth retards should be shot. End of rant... :)

Where did I say it hadn't been happening for years? :p

In actual fact I didn't really see any of it myself (most of the post was tongue in cheek) but the times I went down there on non student nights it was just full of 40 year old pervs (both male and female...) :(

EDIT: Yeah, but I don't think I ever saw a non student on North Hill? :p

Mutley on the other hand was full of them, wasn't too bad though, just a regular highstreet.

Depends where you go and what your into I guess. I go out during the week and weekends infact most nights and get no trouble.

Used to like Fuel/Mousetrap/whateveritscallednow and Air when it was open. Never a huge fan of Cuba or the Fresher though, always sticky/smelly and rammed.:/

Mutley was an odd one. You could go into a few places down there and it's only students. Go somewhere like the Crown, etc. and it's just locals. Goodbodies I can't really comment on, as it was only ever full of people refusing to call the night quits. :p

North Hill (Cuba, Ride (renamed Firefly now I believe), Bac Bar etc.) were only ever students. Got the odd local in during the quieter days I noticed, never any trouble.

Union Street seemed fine on student' nights but there was definitely tension in the air come the weekend. Always see the 'muscle bound god men' letching over any semi-attractive girl. Got on the wrong side once - through no fault of my own - as said girls got freaked out with that attention and came over and got friendly with my friends and I. Always fun having a seething mass of testosterone looking for any excuse to attack you.

The difference between student nights and non student nights in these areas is that on student nights you'd generally see everyone disappear to food outlets and go home messing about. Non-students on large would obviously do the same thing but then you'd also see far more people scrapping in the street than usual. Don't think I ever walked back and didn't see a fight outside that pub just along from the Pavillions (c103s side).

Oceana was definitely an experience when it first opened as it wasn't properly affiliated for a student night until recently.

Not really an issue really. If you've got half a brain you can usually spot trouble coming a mile off and avoid it.

Incidently Amp, how is the Holloway experience?

What is it with the Plymothians on the forum tonight? We all seem to have descended on this thread. :p

It's not too bad, bit dead for nightlife, there is only one place open on a friday and saturday night after 11 and if you don't get in there before 12 you're stuck... Some nice pubs/bars though and nice and laid back so. The Uni is very nice though, still can't get used to the massive brick building and tolling bells every hour, a big change from the concrete jungle that was Plym uni. :D

Doesn't quite live up to the Hoe and Sound though, Virginia water just isn't the same...:(

I'm at Bath uni and the nights out, and streets make a nice change to brum... i havn't really seen any hastle whatsoever, very very few chavs, and they're mostly young....

It's alright in Sheffield... although I tend to go to union nights (so there's zero risk of abuse from locals... it's the abusive bouncers you have to look at for...). Embrace can have locals who are ****s, but nothing's ever properly kicked off there.

I've always felt pretty safe in Sheffield, anyway.

Looks like I've been quite lucky, haven't seen any abusive bouncers yet, in fact the bouncers seem a lot sensible than the ones here in Stoke on Trent.

Locals seem ok, but then again I've only been out a handful of times on a weekend when most locals are around.

Newcastle, do I really have to say anything?

It's a complete BLAST here, out usually 4days a week, always Tuesday and Thursday as the best student deals are on then, sometimes Sunday because it's quieter... Friday is just an absolute NO, everywhere is Jam Packed!

Theres usually so many students, that the bars etc just end up taken over, and the locals really only go out on a Friday Night.

Local Pubs - GREAT!
Bars - Immense
Night Clubs - The only word is EPIC.

I've been out in Sheffield once, was a good night, but sadly not as good as Newcastle.
I've been to so many bars, and stuff I've lost count, yet I haven't even been to half of the amount here.

Try the O2 Academy on a Friday night, it's usually fancy dress as well, possibly the best nights out I've had there.

Thanks for bringing it back guys, Many a night spent down Onion Straza:) Enjoyed it up on The Plain and The Barbican more though, a lot more relaxed and normal.

I quite often went of very late/early walks and runs down there. Easily the best part of the city. Quite a contrast to the city really.

Not hard... the rest was bombed to oblivion!

Aye, I know. Such a shame really. If the city was more like the Barbican across the board and less... brutalist in its use of concrete, it would almost be pretty. When I think of the city now, I just literally think of grey and rain all the time.

In Wolves on the student week nights out all good, thursday we get the forces guys into town from the RAF and Army which for the most part isnt a problem but obviously you get the odd bit of wind up between the 2. Fridays and Saturdays are the usual town warzone with very few students around.

From the thread title I wasn't quite sure if you meant locals as in pubs or people but I see now. I'd probably have had more to say on the former as I had two locals back when I was studying.

I studied in Dundee and most of the time the locals were fine, I certainly saw very little trouble while I was there but that could be I'm horrendously unobservant/very lucky generally in this regard. However the student population in Dundee tends to be quite big compared to the amount of locals - it can make a bit of a difference which clubs you go to, I often went to the Dundee Students Union as it was usually as good or better than the commercial clubs and cheaper.

Aberdeen locals are awful . Went out a couple times over the summer when there were very few students are around, the majority were jakey scum :o.

Although, it probably depends where you go, but places that seemed decent during term term were awful over summer.
