uni students..

cheers guys for your responses...

There is funding for mature students... or do you have a family to support?

Apart from a student loan I understand all other avenues of funding I understand are exhausted because I am just another bloke in a relationship. Therefore I do not think grants or bursaries are available - what do you reckon?

thanks

Speak to your potential universities finance department as there may well be grants/legacies that have been left to or are affiliated with the university for distribution - some of them you've got to fill in applications for or meet certain criteria but they should know what options are available although some are not widely publicised.

As has been said hours will vary but I'd budget for anywhere up to around 25 hours a week of contact/tutorial time and be aware that you will also be expected to do work in your own time. One of the problems if you are trying to fit a job around this is that the hours you are expected to be in university may not be in neat contiguous blocks and may be spread out throughout the day/week.

Doing engneering have a total of 20hours of labs+lectures alone. Other engneering courses lke mech eng have even more hours (about 26 per week iirc). My uni also has very long years, I have exams until 16th June (so if I had shorter years would imagine I would have even more hours per week).

Different courses require different levels of dedication.
I could easly match the 20hours of contact time with work in my own time.
Courses differ HUGELY from uni to uni!

An art student will spend more time binge drinking than actually doing work, but then they aren't really gettting a worthwhile education.

It is usually 9-5 or 9-6, but that is what the timetable covers. In final years the tmetable ends to be more free as you are to do a huge project (dissertation) in your own time which is worth several modules.

Hope this helps.

Im a full time Computer Science student. We have about 20/25hours (ish) of contact time (lectuers/practicals/seminars) a week and they generally want us to spend another 15/20 outside of lessons working on coursework/revising etc...

I went to a preview day yesterday and was informed that the total study time that they expect from you in a week is 40 hours, which is combining both 'contact time' and self study. This was for a science subject.

I do computer science at Loughborough Uni, just finished my first year.

I had 15 hours a week. It gets less in your second year and less again in your third year.

But yeah, it varies uni to uni.

Hours tend to be scattered and vary different dependant on course. History for example has very little lecture time as they're supposed to be spending most of their time reading.

My course had roughly 4 hours a day, every other day, but when everything is taken into consideration, you're still pretty busy.

If you think your free time is always 'free', you'll probably end up failing. :p

15 - 20hrs a week - how many days is that spread across?

I just spoke a university and they advised they believed the course this year ran Mon - Friday 5 hours a day but I am not convinced this is true because the lady was really unhelpful and was trying to get me off the phone quicktime and she was just a customer services type individual. So I made sure I came away with a contact number for the faculty and an email address to verify..

Mon - Fri. You will be very unique if you find yourself in a 5 hours a day course. Even if it is, you'll find it's broken up repeatedly from 9am to 6pm, so plenty of time to take a breather if you need one.

Depends on uni. My uni doesnt have any classes on a Wednesday afternoon meaning very little contact time on a wednesday. If any.

Again, it depends on course and university. I only had 9 contact hours per week this semester but didn't have a day off.

EDIT: Also, timetables change every term/semester, so you may have a day off when you start but it can disappear after Christmas.
