United States Grand Prix 2012, Austin - Race 19/20

Get Sky if it means that much (or Sky Go off anyone you know with the sports package).

You seem a little upset? :p

It's been boiling over for a few year now, yeah. But come on, disagree with me. ;)

I'd love to be proved otherwise by anyone other than Pirelli come sensible time on Monday morning.

And yes, I have just said that the only thing keeping Formula One up there with most modern Tilke tracks in the midst of one of Formula 1's boom is a modest Italian tyre manufacturer fronted by a glittery-eyed Englishman. I'll happily eat my words come Sunday night, but so far its just another track with a million miles of run-off with no punishment with a straight longer than most motorways which relies solely on the effectiveness of DRS. As much as I love F1, the BTCCs Plato-pro-ness is as attractive as this...

Maybe we do have a chance of cracking America after all then.

I used the free Sky Sports thing both in Melbourne and in the summer and was woefully underwhelmed. They hadn't even improved from Melbourne, and that's a compliment. A slimy Jake Humphrey-wannabe. A guy fully capable of climbing up an arse hole and someone who could perfectly imitate a card-board cut-out.

I wouldn't pay £60 a month for Martin Brundle, and that's what I would effectively be doing. I liked David Croft on 5 Live, and don't really dislike him now, but he and Brundle aren't worth £600 a year.

I haven't even mentioned Georgie Thompson's merits yet, but then that won't take long.

I don't see the interest in the climb to turn 1. What does it do? Blind apex? Wow. Shorten the braking distance? Shouldn't they be doing the opposite?

Eau Rouge has a similar climb... in the middle of a corner. Even easily flat-out that's much more a challenge. What's the point in having it on a straight? It's completely and entirely pointless to me. Us amateurs could do that. And it features the new and exclusive Tilke-widened-braking-zone. I can't wait. From 20 metres to 30 metres. Brilliant. For the BBC highlights. Timed to coincide with the NASCAR schedule, so perfect for breaking into the US market. After midnight here. On a Sunday. The penultimate race of the season. Six hours before I have to go to work.

**** off.

Sky. Bernie. BBC.

Sincerely,

this_is_gav.

The difference with Eau Rouge is they know nobody will be braking from 170 mph to 60. Blind crest on turn 1 with all the possibilities it can throw up on the 1st lap would seem pretty scary to me. Maybe you should have a go?

Nothing beyond the usual. Losing 100mph? Even in a modern sedan that's average. Avoid being Grosjean'd or Maldonado'd and you're golden.

And the second lap? Surely after lap one it just falls into the usual Tilke zone of occasional mild interest, but never really developing into a race.

I should stress that I've not actually seen a lap yet, and while at the moment that may cast against me, if that's the way it falls in the race, then I need only quote this post. If not, then I'd love someone else to quote this post and to humiliate me.

The amount of people who seem so passionate and have such strong feelings for F1 but who won't stick there hand in their pocket to pay a bit for it always surprises me.

If it means that much to you, get Sky. If it doesn't, don't. There isn't a fundamental human right that says you must have something you like for free.

Also, Sky plus the HD pack is £30 a month, not £60.

I've seen quite a bit of abuse fired at the BBC because this race mighr decide the championship, and I think its rather unfair and unreasonable. If you have a crystal ball and knew this would happen, that's great, maybe you should have lent it to the BBC before they chose the races to show live?

I thought all the Sky/BBC hate had run out by now. Appears not.

And the second lap? And subsequent 54 laps?

Sorry, but while lap one may be exciting, nothing excites me about overtaking in a DRS zone in the subsequent 54 laps or in what may be the shortest braking zone of the year.

Given Bernie's desperation to crack America (despite his claims), this needs to be the best Tilke by some distance and Pirelli need to match it too. If it's just another Tilke race with a simple flag-to-lights victory, then nothing has been achieved either state-side or in F1. They might as well not have bothered turning up.

No you are right, closing speeds in a mondeo are pretty much equal to what f1 cars achieve. You got me on this one.

I'm sure given the long straight beforehand you can brake from 170mph to 60mph (not that they'll be doing 60mph through turn 1) in a Mondeo, and if the gradient is even half as much as people are making out you'll be able to do it in 200 metres. The point is, in an F1 car, they'll be doing it in 50 metres - that may make the corner a little tricky, but given the section following it, unless they actually go off track, it's going to make for **** all racing. I don't know about you, but I'm not here to see staggering braking statistics.

And in your attempt at dry humour you still miss the main point. Lap one is what got people into F1 during the Schumacher Ferrari years. I'd like to see a bit more action than that personally.

braking down a steep hill would be better.

I don't see the fuss about a blind corner.. nearly every corner at monaco is blind but people dont make a stupidly big deal out of it

Stupid bbc letting sky have it (i dont blame sky)
I just cant justify 400 a year to watch f1 thats only a few hours a month
For that money i could modify my own car or have a track day

And yes..why is it uphill? Nice unstable downhill with adverse camber please!

Also, lotus look dire here (is the renault unit down on power/torqs compared to mercs for the hill start?)

I'll mention it now, and see how many people notice.. Once you notice it, it will drive you bananas!

Crofty cannot say Vettel. He pronounces it Fettel

.

a lot of people in these economicly challanging times cant afford £400 a year. Its simply not an option

(and thats without even considering that the free install isnt available to all , ie some in apartments etc, and therefore have something else to consider - even with the quality issues of shared dishes etc)

You also should consider that some of us put our hand in our pockets a couple of years ago for an HD freeview box when the BBC announced they would have HD F1 for years to come, only to be ******* a year or two down the line.

So yes - I already have paid "a bit for it" and been stung once. So try and look at it from both sides.
