When was the track built?

The Circuit of The Americas, designed by Hermann Tilke in collaboration with American architectural firm HKS, endured something of a nervy start, with construction suffering several setbacks. It was well worth the wait, though, when 1978 F1 champion Mario andretti opened the track on October 21 2012.

When was its first Grand Prix?

F1 first raced at the Circuit of The Americas in 2012, for the first United States Grand Prix since the 2007 race at Indianapolis. Unsurprisingly, over 100,000 spectators packed out the Austin venue, witnessing Lewis Hamilton’s last ever win in a McLaren before his switch to Mercedes for 2013.

What’s the circuit like?

If the corners at COTA seem familiar, they should be. Turns 3 through 6 look not dissimilar to Silverstone's high-speed run through Maggotts/Becketts or the S Curves at Suzuka, while Turns 12 through 15 mimic Hockenheim's stadium section. Meanwhile, the uphill run into wide, wide Turn 1 – hey, everything’s bigger in Texas, right? – has provided some fine overtaking action in the track’s short life.

Why go?

There’s a reason Austin is often regarded as America’s coolest city, with great food and a vibrant nightlife, all united under the banner of the city’s unofficial slogan: ‘Keep Austin Weird’. Then when racing starts, you’ll be in attendance at one of the great modern race tracks. With the Americans’ attitude to partying, you won’t want to miss out!

Where is the best place to watch?

You’re spoilt for choice. If you sit in the main grandstand on the start-finish straight you’ll get – in true US style – the benefit of an in-seat food and drinks service, while those in the stand at Turn 1 enjoy a view all the way to downtown Austin. But if you want to see the racing action up close, find a way into the the Stadium Section stands at Turns 15/16.

Just a reminder, but consider it a pre-warning - can we not have any further derogatory name calling of drivers, team bosses and the like. We don't expect you to like every driver/team, but at least keep comments respectful.

If you don't follow this warning, you will lose access to this race thread and the thread for the following race as well.

This includes but is not limited to such terms including Lulu, Crashstappen, Karen Horner, Whingey Spice etc.

Sector 2 flows lovely. Try driving the track on F1 22 (or any sim racer) and it is very rewarding to nail it but also infuriating when you mess up, as the sequence of corners compounds any mistake.

Would love to see Ferrari do well as I think they need some success to settle the ship.

**** me, has quali always run that late for this race? I shant be watching that live on a Saturday night! The Grand Prix itself will be a slog on Sunday night too.

I expect Mercedes to be in no-where-land with those two high speed straights too.

What's left to fight for this season then? 2nd place & 4th place for WDC and then I guess very little movement for the rest of grid and WCC seems tied up now too (I can't see Williams, Haas or RBR 2.0 scoring any more points this season).

The big constructors fight between Alpine and Mclaren for 4th and 5th is the most interesting. Red Bull could probably retire both cars from the next 4 races and still be leading at the top and Williams haven't got a hope in hell of beating Alpha Tauri to 9th :p

Good point, I don't think so though, after all, it's an accurate description

(and it's not referring to his driving skills, his management skills or anything related to the championship)

Some, she knows about racing so getting fresh input from a third party with knowledge about driving cars round and round without going anywhere is nice.

It's just a different, relatively unbiased opinion.

And she's tiny, seeing her peering up admiringly at JB always makes me chuckle.

To be fair anyone is better than Paul Di Resta. I even prefer Nico Rosberg to Paul lol. Nah Nico has grown on me since he stopped being a cheating snake on track.
I feel like true neutral pundits are becoming rarer these days. You can kind of detect most of their underlying bias and preferences towards different teams. I think even Brundle - as much as I totally respect him and think he's been great - kind of wanted to see Max pip Lewis to the WDC last season in some of the things he said. I think you can actually detect a hint of resentment from some of the Sky team when they have to keep talking to Horner lol. I mean the guy loves the sound of his own voice clearly, but I don't see why we have to allow him to get on his soap box all the time. Sky should be pushing to get different people's views during races. I guess, the problem is that nobody really wants to talk during races as they are focusing. Sky want to add fill, and since Horner is so willing, they give him the air time all the time. A shame.

Anyway America....
Have they sorted all the bumps for this year? It was getting quite bad in the twisty sector 1 last year.
