Universal docking station to replace bedside clock

I want to use my cheapy smart phone as an alarm clock and music player.

I could do with something that I can charge the phone with and that powers external speakers. Is there anything that does this. Not looking for much expense. Can I even charge a smart phone and play music at the same time?

Any knowledge of what's out there?

Yes, although you may as well just get an alarm clock radio with built in dock for your phone.

One word of warning, the sound quality from such devices can vary wildly. My wife's old iLuv dock from like 6 years ago sounded much better than her more modern replacement that I forget the name of.
