I am looking for some web software that will allow me to communicate easily with my project supervisor, upload parts of my dissertation, allow him to post comments/journals etc.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what could do this for me?

Wordpress or similar could probably either do what you want, or very easily be hacked into doing what you want.
