On a small fact finding mission. Can some university people please tell me (briefly) how strict their internet policies are at their universities. Things like; is it free? If not, how much is it per term or annually? Do you have download/upload limits?

in my accomodation it was just HTTP web browsing (filtered) and MSN. Things may have changed now though. This was Chester uni.

Well I was in halls in Bournemouth a couple of years ago. It was free, no up/down limits, but lots ports were blocked. This meant playing games was impossible and so were a lot of other things.

Halls can vary though, a couple of my friends were in different halls in Bournemouth and they had basically full access, and unlimited.

Here I'm not sure on what we do with regard to accommodation as I deal with computers on site, and not with student ones in the accommodation. :)

Thanks for the replies, lucky old us have almost all ports blocked off and a daily 500Mb dl/ul limit :(:o

At UEA in halls we had 10Mbps LAN connections with net speed ranging from 1Mbps - 8Mbps. Was relatively unrestricted (no down/upload limits and games + xbox live were fine) but we couldn't use P2P and could only register 2 devices for use on the network. I think we even had external IPs each, but couldn't host any servers on them. Didn't cost any extra on top of the rent.

Probably best to just ask the halls directly. When I was in halls at Sheffield we had unlimited internet access and no restrictions, about a 2mb connection each so not too bad. It was included in the rent price too :)

At Brstil you have to pay for internet in your hall room (resnet) and there are two packages, both of which have a bandwidth limit (the more expensive has a greater limit) the prices and limits I don't know off the top of my head though.

I was at Bucks, we had no usage limits or anything and didn't have to pay. Speeds were decent (3-4Mbps, sometimes more), never tried P2P but presumably it was blocked, and Steam didn't work either.

I was at Northumbria, camden court. that was around 4mb, at a 10er a week :/
but different halls had different systems they used for internet. some where wireless only ect ect. different speeds and the like.

Speaking of JANET, if all universities are meant to adhere to their rules, why do restrictions vary so much? I have yet to see a uni that actually has strict daily limits and a mere 500MB

Depends on the university obviously, at Kent it is now free, but access is restricted to mostly http services some on-line services work, a lot don't. You would be best asking the university in questions' computing help desk for concrete answers.

Reading uni halls hooked upto JANET so excellant speeds.

No dl/ul limits, all games I had worked, torrents were restricted though. The service was excellant, the hall network department actually went out of their way to help us with connecting to games servers and resolving poor connectivity issues in games.

Don't worry, you can still download porn. :D

And lagmeister, are you saying that the internet in halls/parkwood is free now?!
