University Question - Internet Policies

And lagmeister, are you saying that the internet in halls/parkwood is free now?!

Yes, at least it was free last year, I haven't had anything about it this year so I assume its been pulled into the general rent stuff now rather than free, still haven't noticed much of a price increase.

At Bristol uni accommodation the net is completely unrestricted other than an official policy of no wireless devices/routers but it's not enforced.

Got a ridiculous connection, up to 60Mb!

Hmm, I speed tested my library at 40mbps d/l.

What do you think I'll get wirelessly, and is a restriction on downloads enforceable if I'm on the wireless network? I'll be downloading over port 80.

I don't need to log in to access the wireless in the library, so the only way they'd be able to limit my bandwidth is by mac address, no?

i remember paying nearly 80 quid for mine for the year, the year before last :(

I also remember that at the the beginning of the term, i was getting like 500kb/sec download, which soon fell to under 100kb/sec :(

T'was a ****ty deal.

Portsmouth uses Resnet, I'm yet to find out the limits though. They've also said no wireless devices to be plugged in as it's a security issue, although wired routers are ok if you have more than 2 devices to connect (each room has 2 ethernet ports, cables are provided too!)

I was on 10mbps in my uni accommodation. No upload or download limits. I got xbox live working via internet connection sharing too.

Games worked, torrents and p2p (except bbci and 4od) didn't.

Manchester uni in halls, free 100mbs connection use it as much as you like, but no bittorrent/veoh downloads, basically just no P2p, can have xbox360s/ps3's on there as long as you change it so the mac code is the same as your pc's (they'll even come and set it up :p)

Probably best to just ask the halls directly. When I was in halls at Sheffield we had unlimited internet access and no restrictions, about a 2mb connection each so not too bad. It was included in the rent price too :)

Which halls were you in? My connection in Stevo wasn't too bad, I wouldn't say it was 2mb though, The pings were terrible too.

Ours at UWE Bristol was insane. My mate was pulling 20MB/s on his - note that's 20MB/s not 20mb/s.

Nice. I could only get around 60kB/s at Sheffield, although I could get about 6MB/s from local peers on popular torrents so it wasn't too bad.

I was able to get a good few MB/s - around 2/3 at good times (which would have to be like 3/4am) but we had a nice LAN between all the halls on campus which was good for gaming and sharing things !

I remember filling up my hdd and having to buy another one purely because there was soooo much stuff available across the uni LAN.

Costs were minimal - certainly nothing like £200 - under £100 even iirc :)

Lancaster's is pretty good, 8-10MB/s outside peak times and included in the rent (although it used to be £75 extra). Internal P2P stuff is so-so, the network is fragmented so you can't share things across the entirety of campus.

Really? About 2 months into the first term a couple of years ago Resnet put in a bandwidth limit, I think it was 5 gig a week. I was in Badock Hall but I think it applied to all of Resnet. There were a lot of unhappy people though, maybe they abolished it last year.
