Hi guys,

I will be starting my second year at Kingston University next week. I am abit concerned about University reputation and how will be effect going for jobs or the impact it will have in the future. I enrolled on the Computer Science BSc however just recently I have changed to the MComp Information Systems degree which is a integrated undergraduate masters programme. I did achieve a First during my first year and I am enjoying it. The first year was very much of a easy ride for me personally as I had experience Java programming and other aspects. I do hold a lot of experience in the worldplace compared to other students, but will companies look down on me? I've recently noticed that a few students from Kingston have managed to secure placements at well-known organisations, such as Accenture for example.

Should I be worried? I had the intention of doing a MSc however not a Kington. Maybe somewhere with abit more repuatation prehaps would be a wise choice?

It doesn't matter where you get your Computer Sciences degree. As long as you can say "Do you want fries with that?" or work a headset in a callcentre, you'll be set for life.

mate its not that important anymore these days. im at portsmouth uni going into my 2nd year studying business studies. its all about experience and personality. I'm doing a sandwich course so i have a year in industry and if i get the right kinda company and the right kinda postion it will put me ahead when it comes to graduation going up against others for jobs.

Harsh but true words from the penski

Lol, but on a serious note, if you're applying for a job, then there are other factors involved than simply what university you got it from, and if you did get a 1st, I think that would put you ahead of a lot of applicants from other more prestigous universities.

I think you should go to a university with the highest reputation possible. It was one of the main things I looked at when I was applying to univeristy.

There was Overall Rep, Subject Rep, and also how much I liked the actual university and the city it was within.

At a good university, a Computer Science degree will get you into a lot of decent graduate jobs CS related or not. CS from a poorer uni will likely limit you to programming jobs at lesser companies.

and another joins the uni bashing bandwagon

I don't think it will limit your chances that much, but obviously employees have slightly different opinions of the different uni's. I know at my uni the IS course is much much easier than the CS course and has lower entry requirements. Then again depending on what you want to do a CS degree won't help above about an IS one (and the employee won't know what its like either). I think everyone pretty much agrees than the standard of the courses at uni vary a lot, and due to this employees will look more favourably on some uni's than others. Work experience and placements are what make you stand out from the rest.

With all the reports from the CBI etc telling us that some of these graduates can't even spell, how relevant is a degree nowadays never mind the university it came from.

My wife never went to university and she has an excellent job, well paid with great prospects.

My sister in law is a college lecturer is she is amazed how some of her A level students got the A grades they did as the lack basic spelling and arithmetic.

So she's not very good?

She didn't teach them at GCSE did she.......

To clarify I meant the grades they got at GCSE before they went onto A levels.

Maybe I should have made that clear for the A* level students on here.
