University Results

1:1 for Economics with Econometrics, got my results on the 9th of June.

Got award for top mark in dissertation, and apparently got another award for top overall marks..

Now if only I could get some MSc funding instead of having to use the £7k I get for my summer job on it...

wtf?

really?

every single uni i have ever known is the standard grading already given by Una.

Cambridge certainly doesn't follow anything as simple as those percentages (in maths it's all based on the number of Alphas (a complete long question) and Betas (a complete short question or a fairly complete long question) you get rather than a percentage mark) - even if lots of courses do follow the same or similar guidelines then there is still massive variation between different courses and different universities.

Going to Cali,

What was the CAT assessment center like? what did you do there?

Mine was in Peterborough at the Perkins site, where are you applying?

The assessment day was good, certainly the most professional I'd done.

In the morning, there was a 20 minute group exercise where you have to construct an arch way out of lego pieces. The arch way must be freestanding and two people must be able to go under the arch way (seperately). In this task, I'd advise getting involved the cost calculations and the design itself. Try to be active, making suggestions and also listening to others.

After this, I had an interview with the undergraduate recruitment officer, a person who worked in the IS department and another from HR. You're asked to reflect on your own performance, talk about leadership etc, your knowledge of the company and the role and how you're suitable for the position. It's was a very two way thing. I didn't feel under pressure at all so don't worry about a grilling. Just be honest!

After my interview, there was a laid on lunch, make the most of it. You won't be marked down for having extra's!

After lunch, you have to give a presentation (~5mins using slides) to the rest of the applicants (usually about 7/8) and the assessors. It'll relate to a project you have undertaken, your role, outcome etc. Ask if there are any questions from the applicants (unlikely) and the assessors (more likely!). I was asked a short technical question. Again, it wasn't trying to catch you out but for you to show that you understood exactly what a specific part of your project was about.

This was followed by a group debate. The scenario was to choose who would be saved from a flooding cave. As with the first exercise. Encourage ideas from others and give your own. Try to be as active as possible without being over the top. Personally, I recorded everyone's rankings on the flip chart. This meant everyone looked to me when giving answers and showed the assessors I could take the stimulate the debate within the group.

At the end of the day (it's 9-4!) there'll be english and maths tests. Fairly straight forward there.

After that, I heard within a couple of days when the grad team phoned me to reflect on my performance and offered me a position.

I hope this helps and good luck with your interview!

Hey, i haven't actually applied

but probably will next year (my final year)

thanks for that advice

btw, your presentation was on the project you did whilst there, or something you did at uni?

Ah, mine was for a placement position between my 2nd and 3rd years of university. Perhaps yours will be slightly different for a graduate position. Good luck though and I'm glad to help.

Indeed, since it makes more sense to favour people who fully understand some topics over those who sort of understand many topics. In a lot of subjects at Cambridge its a fixed percentage who get Firsts, and there is a lot of mark normalisation going on to ensure it is all mathematically as fair as possible.

2.1 (64%) Mechanical Engineering (2nd year)

Probably went to less than half the lectures, and revised for about 5-8hours for each exam.. Not bad going!
If I actually did some work Im sure I could easily get a first, but im too lazy.. good thing Im a quick learner!

I've just completed 2nd year mech eng at lufbra!! When you say 2nd year, does that mean you've just completed your 2nd year, or you're 3rd year or summat and that was your previous years result? I'm guessing you're 3rd year, as no one has there results for this year yet...

Not final results... but our passlist went up today..

I'm not on it :(

infact, 1/3 of the year aren't! (only 42 passes)

2nd year physics @ exeter

Not really sure where i've gone wrong tbh, will find out tomorrow :(

Thread resurrection to celebrate the fact that I've achieved a 1st class degree with honours in computer science! I was expecting a 2:1 at *best* so it was a bit of a shock!

(Yes, it's taken my uni this long to release the classifications  )

I had a 2.2 in my final year of Internet Computing BSc so im really happy.

But it was a very boring last year, all the coursework was not on exciting subjects, ie creating an interactive CD using Director (lingo scripts) on Coal

a lot of motivation needed for that one.

With all the strikes too, we didnt know any of our marks from work submitted after Christmas, so that made the last bit a strugle too, but it was the same for everyone in uni.

Just got my results breakdown through...

"I certify that Taylor, C. R. N. of Trinity College has passed the examination for Part III of the Mathematical Tripos, in June 2006, with Distinction and is entitled to the award of a Certificate of Advanced Study in Mathematics."

Module marks were 86%, 80%, 78%, 82% and 71%, and 92% for my dissertation.

Get in.

The group who I want to do a PhD with would be "delighted" to have me, apparently. :D

With module marks like that I'm assuming that's the highest grade. You must be stupidly clever :p
