Do you want to learn how to use Unix? Or are you just misusing a brand name, and you want to learn how to use kernels commonly distributed with GNU apps? Such as Linux, BSD, Solaris...

Do you mean bash? If so there's a lot of very good guides online.

I don't really know what you're after though. My uni has developed a fixation on matlab lately, so I'm doing a lot with that. What's the course on?

Im after these sort of commands with maybe workbooks/questions

Listing directory contents:

ls list a directory
ls -l list a directory in long ( detailed ) format

my advice would be to learn BASH, it will teach you a lot of the commands on the way...

Wiley BASH scripting is a good read.

Actually with solaris you'd be better off with sh or csh

i've never used solaris... so i would say ubuntu

Works pretty much the same in either OS. What sort of stuff you want to know? I've been on Solaris in work for the last year and doing a bit of scripting.

Use whatever they are using on the course, it will just make life easier if you are starting out with either one

Bash is bash however, so it should be fine

LPIC-1 study guide. It's aimed at teaching you things you need to know for their cerification, but it covers all sorts of linux stuff whilst remaining vendor neutral.

You mean sh or ksh. csh has too many shortcomings.
