I've just put together a PC and installed two 1TB discs. They were previously in another machine in RAID0. The new machine has an SSD as the boot disc and 1TB WD Green for backups. The two "problem" discs are both 1TB Hitachi's, bought at the same time.

Under Disc Management they show up as an uninitialized Volume, Disc0 Unknown, 1863GB Unallocated.

I can't initialise the discs, a Virtual Disc Manager error window pops up saying it cant find the file specified.

If I plug them in individually/separately they don't show up at all in Windows.

Any ideas how to fix this?

I'm assuming the previous machine had a similar controller as the disks are being seen as a RAID 0 volume in the new machine? If you enable RAID in your BIOS you might be able to break the stripe via the RAID manager. Have you access to the previous machine? you can break the stripe on that, it'll reset them to jbod.

@lomez - Yes I've tried that but get a Virtual Disc Manager error window saying it cant find the file specified.

@Justintime - I'm not sure how similar the controllers are, both Intel though. First board was a Gigabyte 965P-DS3P, this one is an Asus Z68PV- Pro. I'll try them in the old machine and see how it goes.

Would any software tools do the job? Specific Intel or Hitachi ones?

Cracked it! For anyone in the same situation, disconnect all non RAID drives, boot the PC, go into the BIOS and set the SATA controllers to RAID mode - Save and Exit.

Press CTRL+I as the machine reboots to get to the Intel RAID Manager/ROM. This is where you Reset Discs to Non-RAID. Reboot, back into BIOS, change SATA controllers back to IDE or AHCI. Save and Exit.

Power down the machine, reconnect the Boot OS drive. Reboot it, go to My Computer ->right click, Manage -> Disc Management, select the discs and Initialise them.

Done!
