Looking at getting the HTC Desire with Orange at the weekend, the unlimited data package has a fair use policy of 500mb. Being new to the smart phones how does this stack up in use?

I've used 80MB since Saturday on my Desire.

That's downloading a few apps and browsing 4/5 websites every few hrs and updating the weather / friend stream every so often.

I only surf the web a bit, use a few apps that access the web, and I barely even break the 200MB mark each month.

Depends on how much you plan to use the net and what for. As others have said, if you access media then you'll reach that 500MB limit very quickly.

And I take it you all access the net using wifi where possible first e.g. whilst at home..??

I probably only use 1 or 2 hundred meg a month myself, but thats just syncing and browsing really with the occasional map or app download

It's never been a problem to me, but all I usually do is browse web pages. I don't stream media or download large files on 3G.

With wi-fi on at home and uni, my 1GB allowance from 3 is plenty. I don't browse heavily anyway, usually just forums.

i have 3gb on t mobile but my hero eats that by middle of the month normally....

luckly t mobile only stop you using the internet for web browsing between 4pm and midnight after your limit.... which is when i dont use my phone as ive finished work by then :D

Also depends on how good you phone is. I tend to find I get bored of the small screen on my N95 and don't use more than 100mb a month, I should imagine with a decent screen you are easily going to use more than 500mb.
