iv seen some post's about unlocking cores what is this about ?

and dose it mean i can get a x2 and turn it into a x4 ?

if so whats the benifits or lack of ?

Basically yes you are correct, only AM3 chips (i believe) unlock and you need a motherboard with ACC.

Pros, you get a quad for the price of an X2

Cons, the temp sensor is rendered inoperative untull you turn it back to an X2.

This is your cpu right (from you other post):

Dont think you can do it on AM2, can someone confirm.

I bought one for a mate from the OCUK bundle, clocked to 3.8Ghz stable, but didnt unlock. They already knew this which was shame. I wouldnt have bought a bundle if I knew they checked this and kept the best ones for themselves :(

And you wouldnt do that, noooo such an angel.

i would say buy the 720 if on a budget or get a 955 if you want the quad 100%

with the 720 if it dont work out you still have three cores and a very fast cpu. also you only have to unlock one.

I love my 720. I'm working on the OC of it in my spare time, i'm updating my sig as i get stable clocks.

I can guarantee that if the OP has the Athlon 64 X2 4000+ that it is physically impossible to unlock a 3rd or 4th core for that chip, as it is built as a dual core. It's only the Athlon II or Phenom II series that can be unlocked, and then, not always. It's all about batch numbers... some sites will help you find what you need, but I'm afraid I don't know where to look.

For some background for those that don't know. The original X3's and X2's were failed quad cores. People loved how cheap these chips were, so there was a tonne of demand. This lead to AMD taking some perfectly good quad cores and disabling some cores to sell them as lower spec ones. If you get one of these, ACC will let you unlock it.

OP: You may be able to slot an AM3 chip into your current motherboard, but there are no AM2/AM2+ boards that have ACC, so if you want a chance of unlocking cores, you need a new motherboard as well. Look for anything with an SB710 southbridge or higher. I think there are SB710, 720, 750 chips at the moment. Check for BIOS updates and CPU compatibility lists, as not all older boards have been updated to take newer chips.
