Anyone know of any software which is good for unlocking phones?

Some networks can unlock your phone for free, my network did this for mine. Could give this a try: http://campaigns.vodafone.co.uk/UnlockCodeRequestForm/

If its a 3g I would have a look at jailbreaking it.
Its safe as you wont be getting an update from 4.2.1

I know how to jailbreak but it would send the phone slow on a 3G wouldn't it?

The 3g isn't that fast to start off with but I've not heard of jailbreaking slowing phones.

i think it slows down the phone but as said not heard of it slowing down 3g

No it doesnt slow down an iPhone 3g when jailbroken.

The 3G is also so slow on 4.2.1 that its a horrid device

Jailbrakeing is the best option for an iPhone 3g by far.

the only software than can unlock iPhones is Ultrasn0w, depending on what firmware you're on, decides whether it's unlockable or not
