Unlucky Lottery jackpot win

Denise Fitzpatrick, prosecuting, said the pair, who were both on licence following previous prison sentences, had the details of a debit card belonging to a man they did not know.

She said Goodram had the card number and expiry date written on his hand and used them to buy £90 of shopping at a Londis store on Clapham High Street and £71 of goods, including five scratch cards, at a Waitrose store on Clapham Common.

Never really had any need to think about it before but it had never occurred to me you could buy stuff in store by just telling them the card number and expiry date. (I'm assuming 'card number' is including the code on the back too)

This is what I thought too. Surely it raised a few eyebrows when someone is stood there reading the card number off their hand :D

It’s not clear what happened to the 4 million?

Does Camelot get to keep it? Does it get thrown in with the rest of the unclaimed prizes and donated to good causes? (Does that apply to scratch card prizes as well as lottery ones?) Or do they re-print an additional winning ticket for that type of scratch card given this one wasn’t purchased legitimately then lost/not claimed.

Give them a ring and ask.

This story really did bring a smile to my face.

The very definition of karma.

There's an interesting point in this about ownership.

It seems the win doesn't pass to the card owner as it was bought fraudulently. It seems to have made the entire transaction void.

I'd rather get the ticket than have my £1 refunded...

Disappointingly, it seems the card owner is not eligible for the win, which seems terribly unfair.

My initial thought too but it would be unfair to give the win to the card holder because that card holder would never have been in that Waitrose at that moment to buy that exact card anyway. Had the card owner been next in-line behind the perps then an argument could have been made that the card owner missed out on buying that same scratch card so the win is legitimately theirs!

I think it opens up some interesting hypotheticals.

If you found someone’s bank card on the floor, went in to a shop with it and bought scratchcards it would clearly be a similar case to this and would result in any prize not being paid out.

What about if you found a fiver on the floor and did the same thing? Much less likely to be discovered unless you mouth off about how you found a fiver, spent it on scratchcards and won the jackpot but is no different in principle.

Taking things further, how about if you found a fiver, put it in your wallet with some other cash, then later that day bought scratchcards with no way of knowing whether you used the fiver you found or one you already had?

Moral of the story. If you find cash, say nothing ;)
