Unmountable_Boot_Volume?

My friend's laptop has stopped working and comes up with the blue screen of death. It comes up with the error message:

Unmountable_Boot_Volume

Tech information...

***STOP: OxOOOOOOED

I can't boot in to XP OR Safe Mode.

Any ideas? If it's any good...i have a second laptop at my disposal - had the idea of booting up using the other laptop on a free OS..Linux?

Boot from an XP installation CD and go into the recovery console (Press R on the first blue screen) and run "chkdsk /r".

If it's a file system problem, that should fix it. If it still doesn't boot then it's most likely a knackered hard drive.

is that a dell laptop youre using?

that could be simply operation system problem - simply reinstlall,
or your hard drive might have bad sectors,

its eather one of these two,

i know as i fixed these bloody laptops,
