Has anyone actually managed to mess up a usb device e.g. an ipod due to unplugging it without using the 'safely remove hardware' utility (which doesn't seem to work all the time)?

If it's a flash drive I usually just whip it out, but with HDD based devices I'm always a bit more careful.

But no I haven't managed to corrupt anything by removing it.

I've never caused damage, but I've had a couple of occasions where, without removing the device, the work didn't save on to it.

I've killed a couple of flash drives and CF cards by just pulling them out. However they were cheap no-name brands. My Sandisk flash drive and Transcend CF/SD cards seem to stand up to my abusive behaviour.

Disable write caching and you will be able to plug/unplug with much less fear of corruption.

Write Caching means the device does not always get immediately written to and so the files may not be tranferred before you whip it out.

I ggogles your question... this is from the top hit ;-)

Enabling or Disabling the Disk Write Caching
1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click Device Manager.
4. Click the plus sign (+) next to the Disk Drives branch to expand it.
5. Right-click the drive on which you want to enable or disable disk write caching, and then click Properties.
6. Click the Disk Properties tab.
7. Click to select or clear the Write Cache Enabled check box as appropriate.
8. Click OK.

NOTE: Enabling write caching generates the following warning. This is normal:

By enabling write caching, file system corruption and/or data loss could occur if the machine experiences a power, device or system failure and cannot be shutdown properly.

One of my USB ports says that I have exceeded the power output whenever I plug anything into it, there is a option to reset it but it doesn't work. It actually disappeared for a while. Not sure if it is a hardware/software problem, haven't tried reformatting as this is my main PC and the parts for the new one have not been delivered.

what about usb pen drive melting in the usb slot? came across that before? Melting as in the pen drive getting so hot that you can smell smoke!
