Unraid lessons learnt?

To add to the above, I’m not sure I’d be comfortable with the default UGREEN remote access system for anything sensitive or commercial.

For what I need it’s fine, no really cares about my holiday photos or my Linux ISOs.

There is no perfect solution..

I stay well clear of the uber curated experiences with Synology / UGreen / Terramaster etc. Not just because of normal security concerns, but I find the OS lag and apps become stale and then the effect of constant new hardware releases takes the focus of supporting the older less capable hardware..

I agree that whilst Unraid might be (generously) 80% of the convenience of the turnkey hw/sw solutions, there is enough scope to easily go in to a complete tech spiral of doom..

But, I think if you are willing to learn the basics of servers OS' and a bit of linux, then Unraid offers some guardrails and help to keep you fairly centered.. then as your knowledge grows you can then start to branch out on more and more services to make that financial investment a little more productive..

My learnings (having bought 2 unraid licenses)

unraid is great if you want to stick all your storage into one box and run a load of related dockers utilising that storage.

If you don't want or need the storage to be accessed directly and want to run a load of other random stuff, Proxmox is the way forwards.
