Unreal 2: The Awakening

"Similarly, have you played AvP on the Atari Jaguar? - graphically its dire, while the world is definitely 3D, the characters are still sprites!!!! - really poor by todays standards, but that game had atmosphere that many games today simply lack"
You can say that again its still my fav verson, the scanner beep was perfect so was the heartbeat. It had way more atmosphere then the PC versions of AvP.

Oh hell yes... I fully agree and that.

I enjoyed AvP more on the Jag, was genuinnely more scared, and it took away more of my life, than any game on the PC ever has.... Almost.

I think that the most scared part on that was when you heard a predator, or think you did... That gurgled clickety click and then next thing you know... You turn around 10 minutes later and there he is... And bang, your dead.

Genuiinely **** my pants more times than I care to remember.

No PC game give me that.

Thanks for the tips guys. I have it working OK(ish) now. I configured the CPU affinity and that solved the original problem. Even with the patch though, the game still occasionally crashes to the desktop. Its a shame Epic didn't finish this one off properly rather than kicking it out to the stores and fast tracking to UT2003.

Loved the game also, despite it's bad reputations. I think most people who slagged it off, probably haven't even played it properly and were just trying to be in the "cool" crowd.
No they said it because it failed to live up to the Unreal heritage. Unreal was fantastic - a huge leap forward in visuals and the scale of the environments. It also has a great ambience, memorable music and good AI, and the multiplayer was good enough to spawn the UT series. Playing Unreal felt like reading a sci-fi novel, whereas Unreal 2 was just very average, completely failing to stand out.

Yeah, I think Unreal 2 suffered from "Deus Ex syndrome", in that the sequel was never going to live up to the original and hence wasn't overly popular with the 'purists'.

Unreal felt like an epic adventure due to the massive scale not seen before and the 'interactive introduction' used on the early levels - the first level has no fighting at all, just setting the scene/atmopshere. Then the 2nd level you step outside of the spaceship and witness the awesome power of the Unreal engine, with a huge open expanse in front of you. And who could forget their first encounter with a Skaarj on the third level.... your way blocked, lights going out one-by-one, you rush back the way you came only to find that way blocked too. And then it comes....

Unreal 2 has nothing to match that, sadly. Some nice set pieces (defending an area) and arguably better weapons than the original, but it lacks that something extra and is just another decent FPS, certainly no better than others from the same era such as CoD, Jedi Academy or NOLF2.

I completed it this afternoon. I stand by my original assessment. 6/10. Stability issues aside, its a good game but by no means a classic or a deserving sequel.

Ive heard rumours of a Unreal 3 in the pipeline. Can any one share any information / sources on that?

Further than rumours, no. Epic have been saying for a while that they'd like to make U3 but don't have any plans for it.
