IGN's GameSpy provides multiplayer gaming technologies such as matchmaking, in-game and out-of-game messaging, persistent player communities, and competition systems. Its services are used by the world's top ten publishers and are currently featured in over 500 games. Today GameSpy and Epic Games announced a partnership to incorporate GameSpy's technology suite into Epic's Unreal Engine 3. The tech will immediately be available to any publishers or developers that license the engine.

The partnership pertains only to the PlayStation 3 and PC platforms, and will enable cross-platform play between the two.

"Over the past months we have fully integrated a broad suite of GameSpy online technology in Unreal Engine 3 and have built a fantastic working relationship with Epic," said Jamie Berger, senior VP of consumer products and technology for IGN Entertainment. "We look forward to extending that relationship with a number of new technologies customized for Unreal Engine 3 to be introduced over the next 12 months."

GameSpy technologies available to license immediately include:

Matchmaking

"Comrade" is in-game middleware and desktop technology that enables seamless in-game to out-of-game community features, such as instant messaging, in-game voice communication, and friend rosters

"Sake" will allow developers to store data securely online, enabling gamers to build extensive player profiles and maintain game statistics

"ATLAS" is an advanced statistical system for dynamic leaderboards and tournaments within the game and on the web

Future feature sets developed by GameSpy will all be incorporated into the Epic Partnership. Unreal Engine 3 games that have already licensed GameSpy's tech include Codemasters' Turning Point: Fall of Liberty and Ubisoft's Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway
.

Intersting news I think, this opens up any game using the UE3 for PS3/PC cross platform play if the game makers want it. Still no info of it being in UT3, but I think this pretty much confirms it.

Stands back and waits for "We dont want to play against PC's" brigade to storm in :D

If this is a free service then this is very exciting news. This also explains the allowance of KB/mouse support for the PS3 to allow people to level the field against PC owners (if they feel they want to).

I ask this while cringing at the potential flame war this may spout (just don't), whats the situation with cross connectivity between the PC and the 360 for the unreal 3 engine in the future? I know they haven't included it in Gears of War, but they stated this was due to meeting deadlines, not that they didn't want to/couldn't.

Even if it isn't free, still good news.

I hope it never happens for 360, I think its a great idea for stuff like pro evo, but for shooters and RTS's it would be an utter disaster.

Hasn't it already happened on 360? Shadowrun?

I'll rephrase that, i hope it never happens on a good game, they can do it on as many by the numbers shooters as they like. As long as they never do it with any of the big titles.

Oh dear!

GameSpy on the PC was so badly done, I kind of wish I hadn't read it :(

You're kidding yourself if you think this is not Microsoft's long term plan considering the Games for Windows and Live for Windows/Xbox Live initiatives.

Anyone know what the next 360/pc title offering cross platfom play is?

I am sure they did not plan for ShadowRun to implement it badly.

So i take it UT3 will have dedicated servers? Hope this cross platform doesn't hit the 360, pad vs mouse/keyboard will be instant death.

thats not at all what games for windows/live is all about. Have any other titles even been announced that are doing it? i would have thought if they wanted to push that they would have stuck it in for halo 2 as well.

Gamespy is an *** to use from what I remember. This is good news if it doesn't end up totally gimped, I will only play on crossplat servers if:

A:They are clearly labeled as such.
B:They don't add some filthy auto aim to the PS3 side of things.
C:American turds don't clutter up the voice coms.

If this ends up like Shadowrun I will be seriously ****** off.

All i can say is thank god for Epic. I cant see them allowing a 3rd party product to cause harm to their game. Or to drop its quality any, I'm sure they have an adviser with executive demands watching every move made by the gamespy creators

PC players will have all kinds of advantages like aimbots and wall hacks, not to mention keyboard and mouse. :)

I rekon UT3 on PS3 will be mediocre.

Same old PS3 owners dreaming about games that will never be.

You can't use Halo 2 as an example as that is an old game on Console and they are just adding a port for PC. If they tried cross platform play they would obviously have to cripple the PC players, where if the game is developed simultaneously for both platforms then it is different as the control system(s) can be tweaked accordingly.

I don't know of any other such games yet, but there will be more, I am sure of it.

I think it is only a bad idea if implemented badly, which no-one can predict until it is released.

You realise the keyboard and mouse is a moot point right now ? :p

Others are more than likely correct though

Well on the PS3 version the keyboard and mouse argument goes out of the window as the PS3 version supports it. If a PC user is cheating then wont he be cheating against other PC users as well? Or do all PC gamers cheat at every game they play? Im not sure how PS3 owners are dreaming about this game that will never be? Its out in November, about 6 months before the 360 version is out, according to Epic it looks the same as the PC version but of course it wont run at 100FPS like the high end PCs will, also the PS3 version of UE3 runs better than Gears did on the 360 at the same point in time, doubt it ill be mediocre one little bit!

Complete BS, sounds like they are just saying that to hype it up more.

PC version will obviously look better, I don't think that really needs to be clarified.

The whole UE3 running better than Gears is pretty stupid, how can a totally different game be running better than another one?

They use the same engine, sure but Epic said about 3 months ago in OXM that the 360 is so powerful they base their visual bar on the 360.

Sounds like they don't know what console to promote or something.

Why are you always so angry when there is any good news or information about the PS3?

I'm not angry, I'm just saying Epic don't seem to know what to say anymore.

I couldn't care less if it's about the PS3, and this is barely good news, Gamespy is crap. :o
