Unsure of proper connection

No idea which category this should fall under so mods feel free to move it.

I have acquired an old small form factor PC which ive just dumped onto my brother for him to do his homework on. Problem is it has a built in 7inch touch screen which its native resolution is only 640x480, which isnt enough to browse the internet without mass scrolling.

So im thinking of hooking it up to the TV he has (CRT) problem i having is this PC doesnt have a Video out of any sort just a VGA. And all the TV has is 1x SCART.

Is it as simple as getting a VGA to SCART cable? Will i need to find out the TV's max refresh or force a lower reso? Im under the impression i can get 800x600 on the TV.

Any help GREATLY appreciated!

I tried this with a VGA to SCART lead into an old 28 inch widescreen and it worked just like a CRT for me, but I'm unsure as to whether it'll work for everything

Does the TV have RGB scart? If not it won't work. Even if it does have RGB scart it's unlikely to work as vga is RGBHV whereas tv's normally support RGBS, they also require an interlaced signal. I'd just buy a monitor.

Literally just 1 scart on the back, no RCA's or S-Video connections. Im not sure exactly what you mean by RGB scart? Please explain.

Look in the manual, RGB is the type of video format, Red, Green, Blue, as opposed to s-video or composite through scart.
 
I dont have a manual for it, not even sure where it originally came from its some crappy unheard of name. I will find out the model number and see if i can find something online.

I know he plays his PS2 through it, if that helps?
 
I assume he's using a composite to scart adaptor for the PS2, so that doesn't give us any more information. Really you're better off just buying a £30 monitor off ebay, trying to do vga to scart is really more hassle than it's worth.

He doesnt have space in his room really for another screen, the make is a Wharfedale and the model is CTV21040. Looked it up on the net and there's no detailed specifications about it.

I know it would be a better idea to get a monitor or even a LCD TV to replace it but im not the one paying for it. If its 20quid of cable so be it, but he wont buy a monitor or TV however cheap.

You could try buying a ps2 rgb scart cable and seeing if that works with the TV, that would tell you whether or not the tv supports it.

There is a guide here on how to do it if the tv supports rgb, though it could damage the pc and the tv. And the resolution would barely be better than 640x480. If the pc doesn't have s-video though it probably doesn't have a gpu capable of those output settings.

The other option is fitting a card with s-video support, but you're limited to 720x576.

Thanks for the link, ive had a read and it looks as if the scart is infact a RGB. But like you said, seems a lot of hassle for no real improvement (Other than screen size) I know the PC has video out on the motherboard but i cant figure the exact pinout.

I was originally going to fit a spare gfx card i had laying around but unfortunately it only has 1xPCI slot and even that is used up by the USB card (Believe it or not there is no headers for USB2 on the motherboard!)

The video out port should either be s-video or Mini-DIN 7/9 which will allow s-video output, maybe even component too.
