After my poor fx-9590 took a slating in another thread for being a power hunger under performer. I'm now looking at getting a ryzen but I don't know what one.

My choices are 1600 or 1700 but is it worth the extra cash.

Am I right In saying my ddr3 ram will have to be changed too?

A motherboard board, ram and 1600 can come in about £450 but would I notice much of a difference from what I have now? Am I being stupid in assuming my current 8 core cpu is better than ryzen 6 core, or is this where the threads come in to play? I'm not sure what difference they make. I'm guessing doubling the amount of traffic to each core or something?

Or would I be smarter waiting until I got the extra cash and getting the 1700?

Also in the past I've gone for a pretty cheap motherboard. On my last build I used an expensive one but didn't really find any difference. I've never overlocked a cpu, I have no idea how. Other than an extra few sata or USB ports I can't tell the difference. So what should I go for a B350 or X370 motherboard?

In an ideal world I wouldn't wana change for at least 2 years.

Are you upgrading because you need the extra power or because you've been told the FX-9590 uses a lot of power for the performance you get?

A quick look at some benches shows a Ryzen 5 1600 will net you around 20fps gain on average over your 9590.

For gaming, best bang per buck is a Ryzan 1600 + an Asus Strix B350.

Will be good for five years plus. Once you have a decent hex core or greater CPU, then it's mainly about graphics these days.

This. Honestly if you're happy with your CPU and it does what you want then just stick with it.

What do you do on your PC usually? While the FX chip does use a lot of power and doesn't have brilliant IPC it can still do a lot of things decently.

I use my PC for gaming mainly. I play fps, simulators and strategy games so sort of a mix bag. Up until this year its been fine but games like battlefield 1 runs pretty laggy. codww2 will be out later this year so Im upgrading in time for that (im hoping it not like the last few). Im looking for is to increase my FPS to a smoother level. I upgraded my gpu to rx580 recently but i think my fx-9590 is struggling

It may have been me that "slated" the FX 9590. Was it originally a question about upgrading a graphics card?

From what I remember I, and another, had suggested that possibly a platform change might net better long term gains than changing a relatively high end graphics card for a more slightly higher end graphics card.

Ultimately you should buy what you want. People will always have different opinions on this kind of thing. I will always try to offer advice if it helps someone get the best bang for their bucks.

With regards to changing to a new platform then unfortunately your current DDR3 will be of no use. You will need DDR4 in all new systems now.

The 8 core 9590 is probably a lot closer to a 4 core 8 thread processor than a full fat 8 core processor. A Ryzen R7 is 8 core with 16 threads so that would see a considerable uptick in performance.

I upgraded from an 8 core 8350 to 6 core 1600X and the difference is very noticable in games like BF1. That's using the same gpu.

Worth it if you have the funds but I wouldn't go changing it on a whim

That's a good point. Anyone still on a relatively new i7 or 8 core FX chip might be well worth holding on just a little bit longer to see what Intel Coffee Lake is like and if AMD get the next round of Ryzen chips to clock over 4GHz easily.

But sometimes that upgrade itch just really needs a scratch.

Get the Ryzen 1600, its much faster than the 9590 and uses 1/4 the power, its £190, CoffeeLake will be <£400 with little more performance, in fact if you are on anything less than a GTX 1080TI the performance difference is 0.

With regards to the B350 Vs X370 there is little difference. Especially with some of the higher end B350 boards.

However, if you would be considering using more than 1GPU and more than 1 M.2 NVME drive then you would be better served with the X370 as that has more lanes available specifically for those things.

Yeah that was the one, You where only telling me what i needed to hear. Ive had this cpu for some time now id feel happier changing it. You saying what you did just added reassurance to that little voice inside my head :)

You hit the nail on the head, i got the itch but dont know where to scratch.

The b350 board i found was https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus...ocket-am4-ddr4-atx-motherboard-mb-69v-as.html seems to have good reviews for the price. Id only run one GPU and not got a M.2 at the mo so that dont bother me.

cool well looks the board is sorted.
Majority seem to say 1600 will be an upgrade from where i am now and id notice a difference. However im still thinking will i quickly regret not getting the 1700 and want alittle more power under my fingers

So get the 1700 :D

That board is an absolute stonker. It got great reviews on bit-tech, putting it in front of a lot of X370 boards. Pound for pound I'd argue that it's the best board on the market.

Been looking at the 1600 and this board for a build fopr my daughter.

What Ram would you suggest to get the best performance from the chip? (I might even get her the 1700 yet)

Sorry to hijack the thread
