Unthrottled ISP - which one?

My ISP has been aquired by coms (whatever they are) who are throttling internet traffic during peak hours. Their prices are ridiculous so now I need to move to somebody who doesn't do that :]

Any suggestions?

At the moment my exchange is only ADSL2+, but will soon (up to september) be upgraded to fibre.

i've used my own routers since i joined them years back with no issues

when i upgraded to their fibre service they supplied the modem but i hooked it up to my existing draytek router via it's WAN port

excellent customer service too btw
 
Great - they offer fibre without phone line rental too (a line which I don't need)

£35 without phone and £45 with.
 
Yeah, that bit about not paying line rental is an extra charge to not pay the line rental to Zen. You still need a line.

Are you saying you pay £5.40 for not-having-the-line to Zen and then additional £14ish to BT (or whoever) for "an actual line"?

I believe you pay that £5.40 for a "disabled" line. One of my previous providers offered this. I did have a line, but without a number so it couldn't be used for calls. Just like (some) mobile broadband-only-SIM-cards.

This can be easily done, but ISPs choose to be awkward.

Yes, Zen want £5.40 extra from you if you don't want their phone service, and then you need to pay whatever the line rental costs to someone else.

I am not aware of any way in the UK to order a broadband service without paying line rental. Obviously Virgin Media, leased lines, wireless providers etc. but I think it's obvious what the subject is.

I'll be calling up Zen on Tues to double check about the line rental.
 
ISP's like Zen have little choice but to trade in this way, because at the end of the day Openreach control and charge them for the last bit to your house. You get it for less if you have both BB and line rental, because they can make more out of it in the long run. If all you have is BB, they are very limited in the amount of profit they can make from a customer. It's simple economics and i think you will find all ISP's price in much the same way. What you have to keep in mind though, is that a landline is needed whoever you go with. If you actually use a phone over a landline, then going with Zen fibre and line rental is actually a cheaper option than BT. I have Fibre and landline with them and my overall phone and BB cost per month is lower than it was when my landline was with BT.
 
My line will be switched to Zen on Tuesday. Hopefully everything wi go well.
I switched my phone line to them as well.
