Unused thermal paste - lifespan? AM4 application

Get a new thermal paste mate. Seriously, you buy CPU that is 100 times more expensive than the thermal paste not been able to afford a fresh paste every time you upgrade is kinda daft.

Could be like me he got all the parts and forgot to order the TIM and doesn't want to wait or pay shipping cost more than the value of the paste? In which case I say try it and see. Worst is you have to remount the cooler with new paste. Not the end of the world really is it?

It doesn't matter where you put it as long as the top has an even thin layer. Blob in the middle then spread evenly with a card across the whole of the cpu as thinly as possible.

If you put a thick layer on chances are it's going to go over the side and if it's a conductive type of paste you risk damage to components.

Sometimes you just forget to order some or thinking you got some left over from last build which is not that long ago. But turns out you can’t find that one and only got the old stuff left.

then it is Friday night or Saturday and you are looking at all these open cases components waiting to be put together with the shrink wrap around the case already peeled and most of the components on motherboard fitted. Can you really be bothered to order and wait for another week...

  1. I used my Gelid back from ages ago (5yrs) as I used the ryzen package TIM in the first applicable to run the air cooler then I had to wipe it off to put my AIO on and I didn’t have any new stuff. I was a bit dubious at first. But the tube was sealed well. I throw away first bit of bead then the rest looked fine. Applied it and thermals were absolutely fine.
