Unusual Ext HDD problem???

I have an external Western Digital 250Gb HDD that isn't being seen in windows explorer. The strange thing is, when I plug it into my front panel firewire port it makes the usual bing bong and I can see it as drive K. When I plug it into either of my PCI firewaire cards at the back of the computer, it makes the usual bing bong, appears in explorer, then makes another bing bong and is lost from explorer, never to return. I have two firewire cards, and the same problems happens with either card, regardless of whether they are both connected to the mobo or not. Presumably this is a windows problem rather than a hardware problem? TweakUI does not recognise it either :9

Any ideas?

I don't think so since the front port which connects internally with my firewire card dispalys the drive. Really annoying problem the longer it continues :(
