Unusual temperatures - what to do?

I watched loads of tutorials on Youtube on how to apply the compound properly and followed it to the letter. I left a thin layer of paste covering the entire CPU, but it's seemingly done nothing.

The only think I can think of is that maybe the push pins aren't connecting to the board properly. I used quite a bit of force but three of them never clicked. Any harder and I think they'd have snapped.

Maybe time for a new cooler that comes with a back plate then bud, I do remember years ago fitting a rev.1 Freezer 7 I had one pin that wouldn't give the satisfying 'click' of approval, I had to remove it 2 or 3 times to get everything to sit how I wanted.

Perhaps try the 'pea' method of applying paste too, drop a pea sized blob in the center of the chip then seat the cooler, in theory the cooler should distribute the paste evenly.

What memory do you have? regular or high heatsink?

If its regular you can pretty much take your pick from anything, if its high heatsink you choice becomes a little more limited.

4gb Corsair XMS3. Nothing special at all.

Just opened up the case again and tried to secure the cooler against the board a bit better. One of them won't go in properly and I've broken one of the pins in the slot so that's no good once it's back out. However two of them went in with a click and temps have dropped once again to 73 and 70 degrees respectively.

Certainly suggests to me that the seating of the cooler against the motherboard is the problem.

Yeah sounds that way to me too, your fine with XMS3, just look around the OCUK store at coolers, find one you like and then google it with 'review' at the end of it, do a little research then come back to us and let us know what your choices are.

Do you have budget for the cooler?

I've heard some good things about the CM hyper 212+ for a budget cooler, as well as the corsair A70
