Hi All,

I have been speaking with sapphire support and they have just told me that there is a new bios out for the 5870 vapor-x that might fix the issues with grey screens, if anyone is having these issues its worth asking their support so you get an email that gives you the full details and a disclaimer that it wont void your warranty to flash with this bios.

Always best to cover yourself, i will flash mine tonight and let you know how it goes.

Cheers

Well the bios Version string in the one sent to me is 113-C00140-TST and the atom bios version is ATOMBIOSBK-ATI VER012.020.000.001.036486, just looked at yours and it is an older version, your numbers are 113-C00101-103 and ATOMBIOSBK-ATI VER012.014.000.005.035264, my current Vapor-X 5870 has a newer bios that that already, its on 12.019.

If you have a Vapor-X 5870 i would suggest sending the part number and SKU to sapphire tech support and check it out.

I'm guessing I shouldn't update if my card is functioning ok?
GPU-Z tells me I have VER012.018.000.001.000000.

if its working don't bother, if you have problems bother, i have completed my flashing and i am grey screen free (i was guaranteed to crash using BFBC2 and its solid as a rock!)

However I am now into issue 2, temps, card is idling at 40 degrees and under load tops out at 76 degrees, should I be concerned?

Running slightly higher than normal i think.
Is that top temp gained with Furmark or just under load with a normal game?
I guess the Bios update could have tweaked the fan levels and its temp reaction scale.
Main thing is you have no grey screens.

Post your results :D

I doubt it would be the fan speeds being altered, more likely more voltage is being applied to get cards stable

TBH, I do not see the draw of the vapor X 5870, as the performance gains are minimal. But then, so is the price. But in the future, if you finally decide you want to get a second videocard to run in crossfire, it might be hard to find another vapour X 5870. Remember the 8800GTX+? Very hard to find one of those now.

Irony - I have both :)

The attraction is the near silence of the Vapor-X. I've not got the nerve for water so the quietest fans I can manage are the next best thing.

Those results are under BFBC2, i have been considering the airflow in my case, one of the things i have currently got a PCI soundcard that can only go in the slot right next to the graphics card that may be affecting the airflow round the card as it sits right next to the card covering the fan hole.

I have ordered a PCI-E card which is above the graphics card slots and removes this issue, in regards to the stats i will post some over the weekend as unfortunately i have to work to pay for all this geekery!

In terms of finding another card, i am not that bothered as you can put any 5870's together same as you can put any 8800 GTX cards together as long as the chip is the same, my plan is to buy a MSI lightning when they are around and use that as primary and the vapor-x as secondary card.

right, well bad news surfaced again, it didnt fix anything, grey screens again on heaven and 3dmark 06 so no benchmarks and the card is back in the box going back for RMA, must have had a faulty one, hopefully the next one wont be!

Yeah I arranged last week for an RMA and discussed the same thing, they said they would make a note to do extended testing to see if it occurs for me, I didnt RMA it then because sapphire were working with me to work something out but that did not work as mentioned so im going to RMA it and hope I get one that works back instead.

That was for the 10.1 drivers and is included in the official 10.2 release, it doesnt work at all neither do the 10.3 previews, i guess i just have a faulty card hopefully a new one will fix it.
