Update GPU or CPU on gaming PC??

I wonder if I should spend a little more, just reading about the ASRock X870E Taichi and the MSI MPG X870E CARBON WIFI. This is sort of typical for me, I start a bit lower down the food chain. Many hours later, I have confused myself and I am looking at more expensive options!

Let me simplify.

If you're building a higher-end PC, I'd just get PCI-E 5.0 because there's no point in the small saving on PCI-E 4.0 (i.e. taking the gamble it might matter in the future).

That ^^ means you're buying B650E, B850 or higher.

If you want 3x M.2 slots, B650E and B850 can both accommodate that, but you do need to check the specs for the speeds and for lane sharing issues.

If you want USB4, you will need X870 or X870E, but this almost always causes more lane sharing complications (because USB4 steals 4 spare PCI-E lanes from the CPU).

You would not normally buy X670E or X870E unless you want 4x M.2 slots.

The Taichi is a very nice board, but mega overkill for a basic gaming/desktop PC. The VRM is in silly overspec land. It has some features that you could consider premium/enthusiast level nowadays, like a post code, onboard off/on, rear CMOS reset. Also 5Gb LAN, higher-end audio with integrated DAC, rear SPDIF and USB PD/fast charge.

As your interested in a x3d cpu i would advise against going with any Asrock board as they statistically have the most failures with x3d cpus on them. I know they have updated many bios lately but I would still advise avoiding them for a while as the risk just isnt worth it still.
