It'll clear customs approx 48hrs after arrival, I'm then free to collect it. It doesn't need an SVA as it's over 10 years old.

I'll book it in for an MOT locally and take it straight to the MOT garage from picking it up as it's perfectly legal to drive the car with no plates to/from a pre-booked MOT.

Taken from here:

if the vehicle needs to have a single vehicle approval (SVA) or MOT test in order to be registered, the vehicle may be driven to and from the pre-arranged test appointment. Thereafter, the vehicle must be kept off the road until the registration formalities have taken place.

I have already insured it on the VIN number. After it's MOTd and I have the customs forms back I just have to send the relevant papers to the DVLA to get it registered.

So all in all it should be on the road around a week after collection depending how quick customs and the DVLA are.

Good stuff - I'm back in VTEC land myself and much prefer it to turbos (though i'm keeping my 7 for a track play thing.)

Right, I'm aware of the price benefits of importing a car from Japan, but what are the others? Is it no different to buying a car on the bay, and therefore you have no real guarantee of the state of the vehicle?
(I'm looking forward to your post tomorrow, btw :))

There are lots of benefits to owning a Jap Domestic Market import, generally the cars are a better spec, and have much lower mileage than their UK counterparts. But you can get these benefit's by buying a car that has already been imported and registered etc.

Therefore price is the only real benefit of actually importing the car yourself/through an importer.

You are correct in saying that you have no real guarantee of the condition of the car, although you can veiw the Japanese auction papers which will detail any issues and show the cars auction 'grade'. You just have to use an importer with a good reputation for sourcing good quality cars, and trust them.

As for posting tomorrow, not likely as that's when the ship is currently expected to come in and it takes a couple of days to clear customs etc.

Assuming no more delays I should be able to pick it up on Friday.
