Update on my UNI situation

Why is everyone suddenly looking down on Queen Mary's? As far as law goes they're very good - they do the best pure IP course in the country - and all they're other law courses aren't exactly supposed to be shabby either. I'm really not sure you'll be able to get into queen mary's through clearing.

If you want to do law then also consider Kingston in that list - it's rapidly developing a reputation as being very good for the practical side of law (mooting, client interviewing, negotiation etc). If you're thinking more business then don't go to Kingston - the business students are a joke.

Final question, why do you keep calling it 'UNI'... you don't have to put it all in capitals you know? :p

Oh and everyone knows danger phoenix did,,,, something,,, to get into warwick other than get the grades he did. What, I'm sure, is too shocking and disgusting to ever know.

I visited Royal Holloway and it really was in the middle of nowhere, consider the place where you are going to, not just how good the course is.

And your chances of getting in via clearing to those universities (Durham, Warwick) are very, very slim.

QM is a decent school, no doubt about it - with a decent social scene and newly done up halls.... for london you arguably get the best overall package from QM. However, dependent upon where you want to work etc it can be limiting. recruiters have target unis, where you face a real challenge to get a look in - not fair but how it is.

Queen Mary is decent, however, for all courses and its proximity to the city is an added advantage.

Have a look at the grade requirements for Law, Durham is certainly AAA or AAB at best. Law has very high grade requirements across the board.

Also is it normal to apply to a UNI you have never seen before? The only open day I have been to is at Queen Mary's.

In answer to that yes, but then go and look at it :)

I applied to all of the unis i had never seen before, i did my research on the area and stuff.
I had Portsmouth as my second choice but then i saw Falmouth Uni and it switched my mind, and i chose there as my Insurance.

Don't choose Brunel if you're doing a less intensive course like law or business. Fine if you're on engineering and the course takes up every waking hour but for anything else you'll be bored to tears. There is literally nothing to do there and it's hardly a close commute into London.

dont go to brunel unless you like blokes
There is this problem too but it's not as bad as it used to be, still many many many more blokes there than girls :p

The halls are attrocious and run badly too, I had a horrible time in the halls at Uxbridge :(

Thinking of doing some of the following courses-

-Polictics (L200) + Law
-Philosphy (V500) + Economics,Law
-International Relations (L250) + Law,Polictics
-International Law + International Polictics (MLC2)

At some of these Uni's

-Oxford Brookes
-Brunel
-Kingston
-Kent
-London Met
-Greenwich
-Sussex
-Westminister

My grades for AS are- Art- B, Law- D, Media- C. Im predicted the same for AS2.

Im going to be applying through either clearing or UCAS Extra.

My questions-

-What careers can I expect through the courses?
-Which UNI's stand out?

Thanks.

Law and Business is a great degree. My mate is undertaking this degree and she loves it. She is studying this degree at the University of Kent and she is in her first year. Also, you can work within a legal sections within a lot of international companies. Finding work is not problem, you just need to apply yourself in your degree and get the most out of it. In addition, apply for internships/work experience. At least one of my mates go to one of the universities mentioned above. I would go for either Kent, Kingston or Brunel due to reputation.

Consider Royal Holloway - it's a member of the Uni. of London, yet not that many people have heard of it. I'm a 2nd Year CompSci student there. Academically it's great, but the social side of this is crap if I'm honest. I'd much prefer to have gone to a city University, but when I weigh everything up, the good academic record is more important to me in the long-run.

It's actually no where near as bad as that, although it can seem like it if you only go to the open day. The on campus facilities are good and there's two absolutely cracking local pubs as well. You can get the train into London really easily and they start back up again by about 5am too, so getting back isn't an issue if your off to a club. Staines is actually quite nice and Kingston isn't too far away either.

Out of those, my opinion would be Sussex or Kent. I have first hand experience of Sussex from an open day and my brother went to Kent for year.

On the league tables though, I think Kent is slightly higher, might be wrong though.

What do you want from the uni? Academia, social, both? Big campus, small, green, etc?

Don't do law unless you're absolutely sure you want to get a job in it. It's a lot of hard work and I think there's a few PG courses involved too.

Philosophy? Meh. Be prepared to read a lot though.

International relations - Now, although this is more of a clique course, I did a module for it last year and I really enjoyed it. Well, I'm actually a human geographer and my modules revolve around History and Politics as it is, so I'm slightly bias.

Try and work out what you want out of the course? Something that'll you'll enjoy? or a stepping stone into a career?

I'm fairly sure you can always swap your course if you don't enjoy it (providing you don't leave it too late either).
