Updated BIOS, now CPU doesn't work

I'm building the system for a friend and have this motherboard with this CPU. I've checked, they're compatible.

I installed XP and noticed that C&Q wasn't kicking in even though it was enabled in the BIOS and I had the drivers installed. I went to the gigabyte website and got the latest BIOS version for the board. However, upon updating the system would turn on but I wouldn't get anything else to confirm it was. Fans on, lights on but no POST, no beeps.

I got another AM2 CPU from another system in the house, put that in and it worked fine. Thinking that maybe the BIOS revision didn't work with the new CPU, I reverted back to the original but no luck.

I've tried the new CPU in the old PC that the other CPU came from and no luck. Not even a beep from POSTing.

Has the new BIOS killed the new CPU?

EDIT: NV - the spec i read was out of date on the gigabyte main page - my previous reply would have been irrelevant.

Try below reply - worth a shot.

Additional: It may have been that the first flash was corrupt - you could flash to the latest BIOS again and see if it works with the present CPU installed. If it works try the AM3 chip again? (did you remember to clear the CMOS after the the first flash?)

Tried all of the above and nothing gets it to boot. Not even reverting to the original BIOS. I've tried the CPU in another PC with no luck hence my confusion.

I can see why you're confused - it makes no sense unless the CPU was flaky to begin with and the latest BIOS just called its bluff, so to speak.

So you've tried the new AM3 CPU in two computers compatible with the AM3 format and both refuse to post - and yet both PC's post/boot with their original respective CPUs?

If this is the case it's not looking good for the AM3 chip - i doubt the latest BIOS killed it if it has died - perhaps it was just a flaky chip and the new BIOS just speeded up its demise. (That's if it is dead - it could still be something else we haven't thought of but i'm afraid i'm out of suggestions if there is one.)

Have you tried a search on the dedicated gigabyte forums?

Good luck with it.

Yes to your first point although the second PC I tried it in, while it has an AM2 socket may not work with an AM3 CPU but I can't see a reason why it wouldn't work in 1 motherboard and work in another.

Between updating the BIOS and restarting, I did nothing out of the ordinary to the CPU. Updated BIOS, restarted and am left with a chip that won't POST.

I haven't looked at the gigabyte forums yet, guess I'll do it now.
