Updating Intel drivers (with nVidia Optimus)

Hey,

My laptop has an Intel HD 4600 paired with a GTX765M. Windows update is repeatedly bugging me to update the Intel drivers, but the installation keeps failing ("driver is already installed" - lolwut?).

So I've just downloaded the latest driver from the Intel site, but before installing I just wanted to check if I should uninstall everything (i.e. Intel and nVidia) and then use Driver Sweeper in safe mode to clean all the garbage out etc.? Is that still the done thing?

Or should I just do a "dirty install" right on top of all the existing drivers? :p

Cheers,

Su

I always found it better to get the updates from the laptops site and only install those updates from them. It can cause issues if you use them from other places.

Gregster most cases you will find the drivers on the products manufactures site are out of date and windows update will be nagging you to update. It is best to go to the hardware makers site eg. intel, nvidia, amd etc for the latest drivers. If there is a issue after doing so use the products driver page, you will find now with new laptops it does not matter if you get the drivers from the hardware manufactures site .

I did that and they either wouldn't install or I had to roll back after running into issues. Maybe just me being unlucky but I was advised to only use the manufacturers updates.

Only time I had such issues was with Dell hardware and this was a long time ago and I think Dell were deliberately doing that to stop their customers installing drivers they have not tested or added their Dell branding to them.

Just install the new intel drivers, they will automatically uninstall the old intel drivers and install the new ones.

Perfecto - thanks :)

Yeah if I had a Dell I know how dodgy they can be with drivers (and also certain other OEMs).

My whole Windows install is technically "off piste" though, so hopefully this doesn't matter. (I.e. Machine came with W8 and I rolled back to W7).

Cheers,
