Updating iPod firmware without iTunes - possible?

Hey,

Just wondering if this is possible? I did find one possible method here. I tried this with the latest iTunes 7.7 and there is only a file called AppleSoftwareUpdate.exe and it only provides me with updates for Safari and Quicktime, lol!

So is there any way to do this?

P.S. I have an iPod Classic 80GB with firmware 1.1.1

Hmm so you've tried doing what I said? Any idea what the latest iPod Classic firmware is? It is possible that 1.1.1 is the latest version and so the AppleSoftwareUpdate.exe isn't picking anything up.

Course with the Classic being the current model I'm guessing there is a new version.

Did you have the iPod plugged in and detected as an iPod when you ran the AppleSoftwareUpdate.exe?
 
Hi Marc,

I *think* the latest iPod firmware is 1.1.4 for this model. The pod was plugged in and detected as far as I can tell - it shows up as a "Portable Device" in device manager, and I can sync it with Winamp, so I guess it's all working...

Hmm. I'm running the Apple Software Update and all it finds with my iPod Classic in is Quicktime, Safari and iTunes + Quicktime. Won't find anything for the iPod despite it being plugged in. Perhaps Apple have closed that loophole I found. :p:(

I need a workaround as iTunes won't actually run on my PC for some reason. I haven't tried with the latest version but I'll click on the iTunes icon and nothing happens. Seems like I'll need to get this working or find someone with a reputable copy of the standalone firmware if there is one.
 
I've just installed it hoping that I just need iTunes installed for the Software Update to find updates for the iPod. It won't. :( I need iTunes to run but it still won't. I really can't be bothered to reinstall Windows to see if that fixes this but I need some way of getting the new firmware for the iPod. :mad:
 
Just installed iTunes and updated to 1.1.2 (which is the latest apparently).

Relatively painless, and I don't feel too dirty or violated for having had Apple software on my PC :p

So iTunes runs on your PC then? Have you nLited your XP? I'm guessing that is what is wrong with iTunes on my PC. I've removed something with nLite that stops iTunes from working.
 
Ah. Yeah if I've needed iTunes for anything in the past I'd install it and the obligatory Quicktime then remove everything once misson impossible became mission accomplished. :D

Talking of iTunes do you know of any command line er commands I could use so that I could run iTunes installer but force it to not install Quicktime? Like that trick with AVG and the Linkscanner thing? Something I can type to install iTunes but prevent the installer bothering with Quicktime? I used to be able to unpack the iTunes installer, delete the Quicktime package and save for a moaning error message that worked. Now iTunes gets into a hissy fit and cancels the install if the Quicktime package isn't present. :(
 
But I don't need that. I only need iTunes to check for and download iPod firmware. Just wondered if there was a workaround to trick iTunes into not install Quicktime as it can be a bit of hassle cleaning Quicktime off and leaving Quicktime Alternative to work. :)
 
I use Quicktime Alternative.

And using your method I mentioned in the first post, I extracted iTunes.exe only from the installer package (left out Quicktime and all the other junk).

Gives a warning message during install, but works a treat :)
