So guys, I have an option to upgrade my existing pre order of a 5900X to 5950X for £280. I paid £510 for the 5900X.

Wanted to get something that’s going to last a while, hence buying the 5900X. I’m not sure the 5950X will last that much more than the 5900X.

What would you guys do?

Quite honestly, at the price you are waiting for a 5900 for, I would ask them when they expect it in stock.
5900 and 5950 unless you do lots of productivity will be similar, 280 is a shed load more.

If you’re mainly using it for gaming and general use, the platform will become dated well before core count matters.

Also depends on how urgently you need the CPU and how much £200 means to you.

I’m a software developer but really it’s mainly used for gaming. Overkill I know but wanted something to last a while.

Pointless getting loads of cores if you're not gonna need/use them. And i wouldn't buy anything expecting it to be good for 4-5 years, in just 2 or so years we could be seeing around a 40%+ uplift from current chips.

That’s pretty much my thoughts. Just wanted some confirmation from you guys.

I wouldn't bother

buy a better graphics card

and as mentioned, Zen 4 and Alder Lake are both going to be significantly faster than Zen3/Rocket Lake

Same, and I opted for the 5800x. Memory was more important so I have 32GB of that, but 8 cores has been more than enough for development (couple containers running) so 12 is a high as I’d go.

I wanted a 5900X, however none were available back in Feb when I built so went for a 5800X at £379. I had thought of upgrading to a 5900X later, however for my use cases it would be a waste of money and the 5800X has been fantastic. My next upgrade will be to a new platform, perhaps AM5 next year or the year after.

I would not think an upgrade from a 5900X to 5950X would be worth it unless you have a very specific use case for the extra cores. Save the money for a new platform in the future.

I'd await the 5900x. Wont be long now.
And with the £280, buy bitcoin for the fun of watching it.

Actually I can't advocate that in reality since this site has children on too and cannot be seen to encourage gambling.

Just got the notification my 5900X has been dispatched. Feels like Christmas, can't believe it. The longest pre order ever!
A nice end to the day, can't wait :)
