My wifes phone is up for an upgrade. She quite fancies the iPhone 6. Looking on some websites, It seems an upgrade is much dearer than signing a new contract, is this right or should she barter with someone over the phone?

By all means give the current network a buzz and try and knock them down on price but it's not unusual at all for new contracts to be a better deal than what you can get on upgrade

For some reason I thought it would be cheaper. If she moves to another contract, i presume she would be able to port her number? As I know that is something that is putting her off a new contract.

Not at all, PAC code is entirely free (they HAVE to give it to you if you ask, they can't say no). No harm in getting it and not using it either, as it just expires (it lasts 30 days), and you just carry on as normal if you don't use it. If you DO use it though, it will automatically terminate your existing contract and you may incur some charges from that for early termination (if the contract is not yet up for renewal)

Think the actual port-over takes 1 working day

Yep, contract has ended now. Thanks guys. Can anyone recommend a well respected website she could purchase from? I've been looking on buymobilephones.net they seem to have a few offers on but not entirely sure of reputation.
Thanks

Definitely check out mobiles.co.uk, owned by CPW, used them a few times and got a great deal each time :)

My understanding is buymobiles.net is a large and reputable company (buymobilephones.net forwards to buymobiles.net), although I have not used the myself.

If it was me, I would spend the money instead on the brand new Samsung Galaxy S6, out 10 April. It is by all accounts a fantastic phone. Incredible display, fantastic camera, superfast processor, quick recharge, wireless charging, beautiful case design and colours, mobile payments ready, fingerprint touch security. I would say it's a much better phone than the now slightly dated iPhone 6.

I've gone through all that with her mate. I wouldn't entertain the idea of an iPhone, but she fancies a change from her HTC M7

Regarding PAC number and number porting etc, remember she only needs that if she's switching networks. If she is staying on the same network then it can be done as an upgrade and there is no need to port numbers or anything, it's just the same contract extended.

The danger is if you get a NEW contract on the same network, in which case you cannot port your number. Annoying I know.

If you are looking at good deals on the same network on these 3rd party sites (They are legit), then you need to be careful that it is done as an upgrade, otherwise you can't keep your number.

Any new network and it's very easy to retain the number
